Country mouse taking DD to a university tour next week. If trains are cancelled from Kings Cross to Highfield on Friday what alternative would be best? Really don't want to hire a car. Thank you

Many train companies have ceased bookings due to being unsure what services they will actually be able to run.

Looks like there's going to be an early Summer holiday week for most train staff!

Crunchymum · 16/06/2022 14:04

I'd be wary too. It's not just strike days you need to worry about. Fully article below but screenshot confirms massively reduced services between 20th - 26th June

You are way off the mark here Sad

Its chaos. I have no option but to go to London as it is dd's end of year showcase. We are having to drive. In turn she is very worried how she is going to get to and from both uni and her part time job as she lives in Croydon.

Where are you flying in to, and where are you staying?

Yes lots of trainlines have said it will be Sunday service at the most on non strike days.

Ridiculous

Yodaisawally · 16/06/2022 14:39

It'll be a shit show, I would do everything you can to change dates. Busses will be mad, Uber ££££££££, the whole week will be cocked because they won't have trains in the right places on the non strike days.

WombatCombat · 16/06/2022 14:41

I do not understand the reasoning for it being only a Sunday service on non-strike days. Surely if there's been less operations the day before they can get their shit together and operate a functioning service on the inbetween days?

Ti cause mass disruption I guess. Trains in wrong places etc.

Ds is having to come home a day earlier from his holiday as Eurostar isn't running on the Thursday, he has had a right performance getting his booking moved as he can't get on at Brussels & is having to go via Lille to Paris.

BlanketsBanned · 16/06/2022 14:52

I would call the uni first to check the viaits are still going ahead, maybe staff cannot make it either.

Thank you so much for your responses. I'm normally a 'wait and see don't worry' type but this all seems a bit different. Would it be best to book train ahead online? First solo trip with dd, three years since we have been to London and really looking forward to it.

I would be surprised if any train operator will let you book anything now. I know that Avanti west coast have stop taking bookings

But if you can then do although don’t be surprised if it’s cancelled as the days in between will be a shit show

Three days of strikes is actually a week of chaos

Whatwouldnanado · 17/06/2022 11:23

Tempted to cancel the whole thing. Our flight in to Gatwick has been delayed so now we will be trying to get to Kings Cross on Thursday night at 10.30pm. Also worried about getting back to Gatwick on Saturday afternoon. So disappointing.

Does anyone have recommendations for taxi companies please?

KX to Hatfield is Great Northern and industrial action is taking place on GN just as it is everywhere, and they’re threatening a reduced Sunday service for non strike days. They are suggesting to keep checking for further service notice.

You could try (if Thameslink are running services from Moorgate to Welwyn Garden City, the next station on the line to Hatfield) going to Moorgate & travelling to Hatfield that way - it’s a slower train but might be running (all local signs here are that there’ll be disruption across both services & both are advising not to travel as it’s the same line irregardless of provider).

You could also try a Thameslink service from St Pancras to St Albans (the town to the west of Hatfield) & catching a bus to the Uni, there probably loads as the Uni is on the St Albans side of Hatfield & loads of students live there.

Sorry I can’t give any brighter news as a local!

Where are you actually coming from?
