Do you want a queen cake or a fairy cake??

Just had a conversation with DH and he didn’t know what queen cakes or fairy cakes were!

So am I unusual that I do? To me they’re the same thing but I’m Irish and wondering if fairy cake is an Irish version of a queen cake?

To be fair, this is a man who didn’t realise black sheep were real but he has me doubting myself now!

My BeRo cookbooks has both in. Fairy cakes are the basic Victoria sponge mix and Queen cake is the same but with currants added. It also has butterfly cake.

South London - Queen cakes have sultanas. Fairy cakes small plain sponge (equal weight eggs, butter, sugar and sr flour - 2 eggs for 12 - weigh 2 eggs in shell tgen use that for other ingredients) with icing (icing sugar and water to make it spread) and if lucky a sweet.

Odlums declare queen cakes, fairy cakes and buns to be the same thing. Who are we to argue!!!!?

Have to admit I had the same thought as another poster above, that fairy cakes were the ones with wings made out of their tops. But they were butterfly cakes weren't they.

I spent my childhood rapidly swinging from Ireland to England and back again, like being on a spinning top. So I should be forgiven for my confusion as I was evidently dizzy and just ate the cake and ignored what people called it.

Sounds like a good policy all round!

My Mary Berry recipe book has queen's cakes as fairy cakes with currants in. If Mary says that's what it is then I believe her!
