Explain to me like I'm 5: Energy Bills

For the last 3 years, DP and I have been in the very fortunate position to be housed by our work, and during that time have had all bills included which never came to us so I have zero idea of what type of rate or term the property was on. We are now moving to a new job in a new area and will be renting "properly" and responsible for all bills too. I was just looking for some advice on what people think is the best type of tariff or term to look for? The property is a two bed and will be lived in by two adults and a baby. Any help or guidance you lovely lot could provide would be well received!

Ah no one really knows at the moment if its a good idea to go for fixed rate or not. Average use varies massively on heat efficiency, what temp your heating is set at and if you use energy hungry appliances like tumble driers.

Moneysavingexpert website is a good place to start.
