Holiday homes

If you could have a holiday home anywhere in the UK where would you choose? Or if you already do, where is it?

I would love a second home in the Cotswolds!

I wouldn't have one. Homes are for living in, not to be left empty 70% of the year.

WonderWoop · 14/06/2022 23:16

Whitstable, for some seaside bliss

Nope. Where I live is gradually having the life sucked out of it by second homes, pied-a-terres and Airbnbs. People here can’t afford to buy, there isn’t much on the market anyway and families are moving out.

Homes are for living in.

ShirleyPhallus · 15/06/2022 10:18

I think this is meant to be a light “where would you like a second home” chat rather than a “I’m intending to buy a holiday home where should I buy it” which would invite the debate on morality of owning a second home

If the former, I’d love a little beach house in Cornwall.

If the latter, please don’t as they price locals out of the area.

Pedallleur · 15/06/2022 10:42

north East Coast - Northumberland. Scottish Borders or somewhere in Scotland on the coast.

You're correct, it's the former.

I've also never been to Cornwall and it's very high up my list! I've heard such great things about it

If money and time were no object then I'd like all of these please

a house in Bath
a cottage in Rhossili on the Gower Peninsular
a cottage in Bamburgh and
a flat in St Andrews

TheVolturi · 15/06/2022 10:52

A cottage in the Scottish Highlands for definite!!

TheVolturi · 15/06/2022 10:52

In fact I'd never want to come home...

thebabessavedme · 15/06/2022 10:53

Im at my static caravan in Norfolk right now, beautiful day, all I can hear is wildlife, breakfast outside then reading under my parasol until I go for a glass of something cold at the village pub Grin

It wont happen because we could not afford it but I would love to own a remote cottage to use in the winter months, all open fires and huge candles and warm throws and a country kitchen, a small Scottish Island would be lovely, I would wear a big cashmere jumper and socks and never look wet, cold or shiverery! a girl can dream! Grin

Ukholidaylover · 15/06/2022 10:58

Our goal is to own a lodge in the Lakes and one in Wales!

WaitroseWoman · 15/06/2022 11:01

I wouldn't, in all good conscience. Holiday/second homes are bleeding the life-blood out of so many communities. They make people homeless when existing rentals are sold to holiday/second home buyers. They prevent local people and much-needed workers from being able to find and afford a home to rent or buy, and hit local businesses, services and schools. Out of season, they turn once-thriving communities into ghost villages. A 10% limit on the numbers of them in any area is long overdue. Increasing council tax on them is only tinkering around the edges of a huge and serious problem.

Chemenger · 15/06/2022 11:03

Either the East Neuk of Fife or Northumberland. I love the idea of a cosy cottage nestled in the Scottish highlands, but I know the reality is rain, midges, bog and having to drive miles for a pint of milk.

cottagegardenflower · 15/06/2022 11:12

Norfolk seaside, or saltburn

dolphinsarentcommon · 15/06/2022 11:12

I'll have a cottage on a remote Scottish island and a helicopter to get me there please.

I think second homes have become such a critical issue in many areas that it's impossible for many of us just to see it as a light-hearted subject. It's a controversial subject.

The exception being caravans and lodges, built for holidays and not denying people actual homes.

I agree @mirrorballer - I'm aware of some even empty for 50 weeks of the year.

WalkingOnSonshine · 15/06/2022 11:22

In the UK, one of the North Devon beaches.
Abroad, I’d love something with a pool in the South of France, a little beachside place in Kommetjie, South Africa and maybe an apartment in a complex in Australia.

That’s for when I win the lottery & spend my life chasing the sun.

KohlaParasaurus · 15/06/2022 12:07

I live in a part of the country in which other people have holiday homes and sometimes yearn for the buzz of a city, so I'd like a holiday home in London.

Branleuse · 15/06/2022 12:11

I have a holiday home in rural france that we dont get to use nearly as much as we thought, so i think when we sell it, id buy somewhere thats much easier to reach where I could just go for weekends. Maybe an hour drive but on the coast.
If its too far away then unless youre retired, guarantee it wont be used as much as u think

Bunty55 · 15/06/2022 12:14

I would love to have a cottage by the sea for my grandchildren to stay during school summer holidays - hell I would even settle for a caravan !
