Holiday homes

If you could have a holiday home anywhere in the UK where would you choose? Or if you already do, where is it?

I would love a second home in the Cotswolds!

I live in the cotswolds and most of the pretty little villages around here are devoid of life in the week. Pubs, shops and PO's have closed and the young can't afford to buy or rent. Second and third homes have decimated the area. If you want to live in a sterile museum OP then I guess you'd like it here, but I'm moving away when I retire.

balalake · 15/06/2022 12:24

Nowhere. I'd be content with them being illegal or with very high taxes as a deterrent.

mirrorballer · 15/06/2022 13:43

I'm really heartened by lots of the responses on this thread. I'm so pleased people are now defending communities that are so threatened by 2nd home owners.

We have a tiny little holiday home in the forest of dean, its an old stable on what used to be a small holding. It can’t be used as a permanent dwelling, when we aren’t there we rent it out to other adopters and fosterers.

Sounds lovely!

East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. Absolutely stunning, fishing villages, lovely food, clean beaches. There are some villages which are practically swallowed up by 2nd homers so in reality, maybe airbnb!!

carefullycourageous · 15/06/2022 18:19

It is not a light topic though, second home owners are ruining many communities.

Bearsan · 15/06/2022 18:24

The Cotswolds, York, London or Dorset.

exLtEveDallas · 15/06/2022 18:25

We have a caravan in Somerset. DD and I use it as a starting point to go to places for a couple of days at a time. Of all the places we’ve been so far we really enjoyed Torquay, Newquay and St Ives. So a dream second home would be a small cottage by the sea in one of those places.

Crackingowlsanctuary · 15/06/2022 18:37

We have a holiday home in the Cotswolds…! But it’s in a holiday-type lakes area and they are all second homes (you’re not allowed to purchase one as a first home). We’ve just started renting it out after having it to ourselves for a few years. It is a beautiful area.

withiceplease · 15/06/2022 18:43

@Crackingowlsanctuary I may be a neighbour!😂

Crackingowlsanctuary · 15/06/2022 18:47

@withiceplease oo interesting… 😬 we’re at the LM one (Assuming we’re talking about the same ‘lakey’ area!)

HikingforScenery · 15/06/2022 18:47

Tough!
Im very tempted by the Cotswolds but Scotland won my heart right from my first visit so it’ll have to be somewhere near Loch Lomond or in Dumfries& Galloway.

MiniatureHotdog · 15/06/2022 18:51

In my imaginary life I'd need a few. A chic flat in London for using when we pop to town for shopping and a show (we're rich in this life by the way), a lovely big house literally on the beach somewhere lovely, oh and cute cottage somewhere where we'd spend our days doing wholesome country walks followed by pub lunches.

Happy to operate on a timeshare basis if anyone else wants in? After all we couldn't stay in 4 places at once and I'd not want them empty 😀

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/06/2022 18:51

Simewhere on the Norfolk or Kent coast so I could drive there often.

The people of Norfolk and Kent can sleep easy however as I am lucky to afford a primary home, let alone a holiday one!

A cottage in the Scottish Highlands for definite!!

Ooh yes, please!

IggyAce · 15/06/2022 18:53

Northumberland coast, Alnmouth or Embleton.

😂😂😂 I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. If your countryside home is in the Cotswolds I'm happy to share!

My friends and I stayed in one of these lake houses right on the lake last year! Just beautiful

@sunja Lovely isn’t it! We fell in love with the area after a couple of weekend breaks there with the kids years ago… feel v fortunate to have been able to get our own place there

xippo · 15/06/2022 19:06

Cornwall, northumberland, Yorkshire coast.
my friend has a holiday let/second home. Was up for sale many years before she bought it, really cheap too. needed lots doing to it, would have fallen into much worse disrepair if she hadn't bought it.

transformandriseup · 15/06/2022 19:08

I would never buy a home and leave it empty for most of the year but a static caravan in another coastal area would be lovely.
