If you could have a holiday home anywhere in the UK where would you choose? Or if you already do, where is it?

I would love a second home in the Cotswolds!

@sunja Lovely isn’t it! We fell in love with the area after a couple of weekend breaks there with the kids years ago… feel v fortunate to have been able to get our own place there

It really is! And beautiful walks around and lovely pubs. We really had a great time, would love to go back.

@Crackingowlsanctuary ooh no in that case - I'm on WM
Had one 19 years now and best money we ever spent! I'm there half the time these days now I'm free of pesky kids

Lyme Regis, right in the town, staggering distance from beach, shops and the Harbour Inn.

I'd want one Devon/Cornwall way but it's too far to drive for weekends so would probably choose Whitby/Robin hoods bay. Or Lake District

@fontime Love the Lake District! So beautiful. Think it would be too far for us for the weekend too though. We really want to stay at The Gilpin in the Lakes soon!

Apart from the already mentioned fact about draining local communities a second home/holiday home can be draining.

Friends had one, inherited it from her mum who had it for ages, lived there semi-permant for weeks at a time after retirement. Lovely cottage somewhere in the New Forest.

They enjoyed it but found it also cumbersome. They paid a local caretaker to keep an eye on it. Insurance and utilities crept up, maintenance and general upkeep which needed a budget. The "need" to go regularly over long weekends which worked when the children were small but not when school started. The "need" to spend school holidays there instead of going away somewhere else.

In the end they sold it. They. thought about converting it into a rental but my friend couldn't get her head around making it into a unpersonalised property when she had good memories of the house.

Somewhere near a beach! Preferably a sandy one although my sister lives on the South coast with a stony beach and it is lovely there too. We're fond of the Margate area, and also the Isle of Wight! Fantasy decisions are hard!

Where abouts in the Cotswolds? It's quite vast!

fontime · 15/06/2022 21:21

@sunja yes I love the lakes. Buttermere and coniston are stunning. Windermere is beautiful but a bit too crowded for me. Also love Ulswater in the north lakes.

@fontime yes, so stunning. Very relaxing and almost feels as if you're in another country!
