Americans living in the UK - US Embassy passport appointments

Has anyone succeeded in getting an appointment at the US Embassy to renew children's passports? And, if so, have you got any tips for me? For example, perhaps the appointments open up at same day/time each week?

I had to get three of these appointments for the same day!! It was a nightmare and the only way I managed it was to frantically check around 10am everyday. When I did eventually get one I lost it because I wasn't fast enough when it came to filling in all the details, my time would disappear and I'd have to start again!! It's a highly frustrating system.

Seems like my experience is quite usual. How annoying.
