Middle class identifiers 2022

1000 replies

Pullandpush · 14/06/2022 08:06

I read a similar thread a few years ago & the main middle class markers were hummus, organic food, private education, boden, ski trips etc, farrow & ball..
Are these unchanged for 2022 or have the identifiers shifted?
Since the pandemic I've seen a rise in the "hipster" style MC especially the men, maybe the working from home has allowed them to relax into the unshaven, casual look which wasn't there a few years ago...
Private education seems to be on the wane but that may be due to the cost of living..
Any other main MC identifiers I missed?

Indeed, our household is 120k and no way would I want to shop exclusively at Waitrose. I certainly pop into Waitrose and M&S once or twice a week but not as out main shop

sunglassesonthetable · 16/06/2022 18:12

You need a title to be UC?

Hmm, don't think so.

I think that an MBE can be earned from one's own efforts, the other two are generally given for mobilising and managing others, so perhaps higher income but someone like Dave Fishwick will always be proudly WC despite the big house, Ferrari and helicopter.
I would be interested to hear of anyone who has received a knighthood with a net worth of less than £1million.

Captain Sir Tom Moore?

sunglassesonthetable · 16/06/2022 18:25

Sir Hoy and Sir Wiggins

Probably millionaires now.

sunglassesonthetable · 16/06/2022 18:27

You need a title to be UC?

No not really.

Google Prince William's best friends. Also The Parker Bowles or The Goldsmiths spring to mind.

lifeturnsonadime · 16/06/2022 18:28

The quiz linked upthread is interesting.

Depending on whether I shop in Aldi or Waitrose I'm working or middle.

There wasn't an option to shop in both, which is the reality. Basics in Aldi, top up luxury items Waitrose.

But honestly cares? Most people are not far from poverty when it comes to it and are subject to a degree of good fortune for health. We're all human.

KirstenBlest · 16/06/2022 18:33

@newnamethanks , Princess Anne's children are Royalty. Class doesn't apply to them.

SavBbunny · 16/06/2022 18:49

@lifeturnsonadime

I like your name and thoughts. If you give up a six figure salary dont expect a house in a smart area to provide care. £100k in savings doesn't cut it it if you need a house with a downstairs disableded suite it costs £250k.The tax payer pays nothing! I pay the highest rate of tax but it pissed me off to fight for £69 a week to wipe arses (three times). Boden, lovely, get over yourselves.

Class does apply. They are upper class ie aristocracy (not all of whom are titled)

KirstenBlest · 16/06/2022 19:08

@RoseAndRose , UC, aristocracy and royalty are not the same.

@KirstenBlest how would you differentiate between UC and aristocracy?

Captain Sir Tom Moore?

No idea what his net worth was, but the garden he walked down for his fundraising wasnt exactly the back yard of a small terrace....

@RoseAndRose , UC, aristocracy and royalty are not the same.

There's so few of them, just a scattering like sprinkles on a trifle, it's not really worth separating when a cadet or maternal line is no longer sufficiently royal/aristocratic

There's a bit of a range between millionaire and small terrace!

Octomore · 16/06/2022 19:32

His house was clearly massive though! I was being understated.----

KirstenBlest · 16/06/2022 19:32

Aristocracy are upper class but upper class isn't necessarily aristocratic.
Aristocratic is blue-blood, upper class is hard to define but it is social standing, power and (usually old) money.

Royalty stands above aristocracy and U.

Many of the opinions on class on this thread and similar ones are quite off the mark.

RenegadeMatron · 16/06/2022 19:52

Aristocracy and royalty are obviously different (which is why the press loved to refer to Lady Diana as a ‘commoner’).

But it’s never been my understanding that you could truly be U without being part of the aristocracy.

Mamapep · 16/06/2022 19:52

Not weeding your garden
Planting wildflowers
Making your own Kombucha/Sourdough/Kimchi/ anything fermented
Making homemade cakes for your child’s birthday instead of buying them
Eating bread again
Lucy & Yak
Doing a ceramics course

Sd352 · 16/06/2022 19:53

“There's a bit of a range between millionaire and small terrace!”

This is why these markers must be so dependent on region etc. — in most of London, a small terrace is a million…

You could easily be a millionaire between property, investments etc and live in a small terrace.

Anyway, as an immigrant, I find these threads quite amusing.

ArabeI · 16/06/2022 20:04

*"Veja wearers are a puzzling phenomenom, can't get my head around that one. Why does it have to be Veja and no other trainers will do?

I didn't know about that. I think they're quite popular now? I spot a few people wearing them out and about. I have a couple of pairs now but only to wear with gym clothes. I wear different trainers for running.

Though I first spotted Veja in Sweaty Betty!

Anything to do with their supposed environmental credentials?*"

It could well be! Though I confess I just spotted them and liked them.

bippityboppity87 · 16/06/2022 20:53

"There's a bit of a range between millionaire and small terrace!"

Well yeah. I live in Edinburgh and depending on location, bog standard flats, 2 bed, no garden, sell up to £500k, possibly more. Where I am currently as it's quite central, having a quick look on Zoopla, there are flats in my area that are selling for over £300k. I don't know who's buying them, I think it's bonkers personally. But that's another thread 😂 I assume it's similar in London

pipping · 16/06/2022 23:18

Why do people feel so strongly that this shouldn’t be discussed? There are so many conversations had on MN that you probably wouldn’t have IRL and this is one of them.

I think you can be interested without being obsessed.

Personally I find it fascinating. You could open someone’s fridge, look at the labels on the clothes in their wardrobe and ask them what they did at the weekend and probably (not always!) know straight away if they’re MC.

RenegadeMatron · 16/06/2022 23:31

I find it fascinating, too.

I’m not in the UK, but lived there for 13 years, and so I find the difference (and similarities) between my country and the UK, in terms of class, fascinating, also.

I also find it really interesting the number of tedious people who come onto these threads absolutely incensed that people are talking about it. Grin They get so angry, with their ‘no-one cares’ shrieks. They obviously care more than most!

Chaoslatte · 16/06/2022 23:55

@pipping I love looking in people’s fridges! I find it so interesting 🤣 I love the Christmas fridge threads for that reason. You get a lot of fun sponges on those too.
