Middle class identifiers 2022

1000 replies

Pullandpush · 14/06/2022 08:06

I read a similar thread a few years ago & the main middle class markers were hummus, organic food, private education, boden, ski trips etc, farrow & ball..
Are these unchanged for 2022 or have the identifiers shifted?
Since the pandemic I've seen a rise in the "hipster" style MC especially the men, maybe the working from home has allowed them to relax into the unshaven, casual look which wasn't there a few years ago...
Private education seems to be on the wane but that may be due to the cost of living..
Any other main MC identifiers I missed?

We're all MAD middle class here!

Being able to afford Lurpak in 2022 Grin

... to go on their organic, artisan bread 😉

The one thing I hate about the UK is the obsession with the class system such an outdated concept in 2022.

Every country in which I have lived has had some sort of social differentiation system, it really isn't just a British thing.

Which income brackets would you define as middle class?

£80k household income?

Dahlly · 15/06/2022 19:09

Watch ‘The other one’ on BBC iplayer. Perfect illustration! Two sisters, very different upbringings.

WhoppingBigBackside · 15/06/2022 19:10

There are excellent brands of british butter.
Far more MC to keep the food miles low.

rachtimm · 15/06/2022 19:10

Must find out what a dryrobe is lol

sunglassesonthetable · 15/06/2022 19:12

I always think it silly to judge "class" on hobbies, too. Who says that attending Ascot and opera is more classy than going to an athletics event or a pop concert?

One is not more 'classy.' That's a value judgement.

But you will get lots and lots of MC people at the Opera and Ascot. It's a marker. But there will be some WC people.

But then there will be lots of MC people at the pop concerts etc. But as there is probably more of a mix it's less of a marker.

@Samanabanana thanks for your comment! Such a relief! I didn't identify with most of the other things mentioned but due to my job I think I'm middle class.

I bought lurpak recently so all is good now.

But does it count since I bought it in Iceland? ( I have never stepped foot in a Waitrose)

Grin

A smallish pack of lurpack spreadable was £5 in Sainsbury's this week so my class signifiers might have to go down. Maybe spreadable isn't very mc though, maybe that's block butter in a dish or Waitrose french butter with bits of salt in it.

Diva66 · 15/06/2022 19:20

I’m working class and very common.

bippityboppity87 · 15/06/2022 19:25

I love Lurpak. Well "love" is probably a bit excessive, but much prefer it over other brands. Don't know why, just tasted better. A fiver is quite steep though, so only buy it if it's on offer. But will happily settle for Norpak Grin

It's all bonkers isn't it? The main thing I've noticed is the more money we have - we've slogged to found and develop a very successful business, which now probably puts us in the top 10% of earners - the less I care about and of these "markers". Our cars are old, the house is a tip and in need of redecoration, the kids wear nearly entirely secondhand and about 80% of mine and my partner clothes have some sort of hole in them

I wonder if money just brings the ability to just not give a toss what other people think? And not need to conform and keep up with what everyone rose thinks is cool?

The MC is surely is just a consumerist dream?

Totally agree with this

Dailymenu · 15/06/2022 19:28

For some reason a lot of people I come across seem to think I'm MC. I wasn't born in the UK and don't really identify as MC, but it would seem Brits consider me so.

faffadoodledo · 15/06/2022 19:28

What's so special about Lurpak at that price? I've just put some Tesco own brand butter in my basket at £1.62. Could I be buttering bettering myself?

MintJulia · 15/06/2022 19:29

This thread is quite reassuring. No electric car or pizza oven here. No man either, hipster or otherwise. And definitely no grey. 😅

Palygold · 15/06/2022 19:31

more like 40k now

School fees? Boarding or day?

Boarding still isn't quite 30k here (midlands).

LovelyYellowLabrador · 15/06/2022 19:34

im not sure this is much of a thing anymore

sunglassesonthetable · 15/06/2022 19:34

you can’t buy things to be middle class or I could just go out and buy everything on these lists and then stick on radio 4 and be middle class, which I’m not.

Those are lists of observations of some MC people. Not a lists of to dos.

You could be MC without them or WC with them.

5128gap · 15/06/2022 19:36

Rosehugger · 14/06/2022 10:03

Around here the mc all seem to own a white fluffy poo style dog or two usually called Bella or Coco!

I think that's aspiring middle class, a lower middle class marker. Proper middle class don't have cross breeds, they have dogs like labradors and pointers who need serious exercise, and they have the time to do that.

Coco and Bella the designer poos in colour to coordinate with home decor: Wealthy working class
Bess, Ben, Jess the pure bred working dogs: Middle aged solid middle class.
Arthur, Stanley, Nye, Edith, the rescues of indeterminate breed: Young trendy middle class

devilsice123 · 15/06/2022 19:37

that's a shame because I'm sure your a lovely person and I don't know why we are still obsessed with class. When I lived down south in Wiltshire, local lord of the manor walked about with a couple of bottles of wine from the local spar and in his tracksuit. Nice people in all different classes of society.

SpiderVersed · 15/06/2022 19:39

Christ, except for being a lard arse, I am apparently a middle class cliché.

oh, no dogs either. But both hens and quail and cut flower garden and wildflower meadow, so that probably makes up for lack of canine.

And locally produced farmhouse butter from milkman (what’s the big deal about Lurpak?)

Lois345 · 15/06/2022 19:39

That is not correct. Terms working class, middle class and upper class are dependant on income

Angrymum22 · 15/06/2022 19:40

Wearing a dry robe after wild swimming rather than on the school run😉

Sorry it’s a little more complex than money.

cafedesreves · 15/06/2022 19:41

@Snoopsnoggysnog private is only a choice if you have huge salaries... I work at one and fees are £20k a year. You could buy 2 bouquets of £25 Freddie's flowers a DAY for the cost of private school. It's not comparable.
