Sudden pain right side back under rib cage

My DH has been in pain since mid morning and it's getting worse. He says he thinks it's muscular but I'm not so sure. It's on his back, on his right hand side under his rib cage. Any ideas of what it could be and what might help? I've suggested some pain relief, is there anything he shouldn't take if it's his kidneys or something else?
(Never had any back pain of any kind before, but he was doing intense DIY yesterday) He has a high pain threshold and it's making him gasp a bit.
Thank you.

Gallstones?

Roselilly36 · 13/06/2022 19:04

I would guess gallstones, pain is usually very sudden and very, very painful, has had eaten anything fatty, that can cause a gallstone pain to flare up.

I second gallstones. Excruciating pain.

Ooh! Interesting, we just had salmon for dinner. Would that make it worse?

Gallstones

Lots of things it could be and no one here can diagnose him I’m afraid - but if it keeps getting worse or doesn’t improve in a couple of days he should see GP.
My sister in law had shingles recently and it started as backache to one side (in same place as your DH), which spread round to front. Rash didn’t develop until a couple of days in.

Yes any rich/fatty foods will make it worse, even good fats like salmon. Sounds like biliary colic.

When I had gallstones, it felt like something had been pushed through my back from back to front, right hand side under the rib cage around braline. No position alleviated it and if I pressed hard on my front at the same point it was like pushing against a bruise. I also had this odd feeling like maybe a poo or passing gas would relieve it but it it didn't. Painkillers paracetamol then ibuprofen 2 hours later would dull it a little but it was still there. It would last a few hours, anything up to 8 then start to fade and would reoccur whenever I ate something that didn't agree with with my gallbladder, usually fatty or heavy foods.

I had the exact same thing around a month ago OP.
I'd just taken my husband to the airport and it came on suddenly on my drive home.
I took a couple of ibuprofen which eased it.
The pain gradually lessened over a few day then went altogether.
I have no idea what it was, nor what caused it.
I could only liken it to severe trapped wind.

Costochondritis maybe. Bloody hurts

cushioncovers · 15/06/2022 17:35

What was it op?

chickyellowcute · 16/06/2022 06:26

gallstones or costochondritis. I had the same and suspected gallstones, doctor said it was costochondritis though. I got told to have regular Ibuprofen and rest - it worked, all much better now. Oh and always bend from knees, not back/spine in future that makes it happen again for me.
