Preferably costal, with pretty towns to visit, possibly near enough for a day trip to Glasgow.

Dumfries is quite nice, a nice park, a castle, the Creighton Estate is a nice place to stay. We visited here for a few days recently and it was ok but had to really look for things to do with the children.

Ayr is also nice with the beach, not been here for a few years tho.

If you want to venture a little further into England, Siloth area is nice and has prettier villages to visit and nice beach.

Ayr was very pretty in parts. Very little to do though outside of the beach though. Does it need to be SW?

Largs. On the coast - traditional Firth of Clyde holiday resort. Kelburn Country Park and Castle just outside the town. Gentle walks along prom or more strenuous hill-walking if you prefer. Nice eateries and lovely ice-cream and cakes! You can explore Ayrshire, get to Glasgow in less than an hour by car or take the train. Ferry to Cumbrae takes 5 mins or you can head down to Ardrossan for ferry to Arran or up to Wemyss Bay for ferry to Bute.

Prestwick. Just further north than Ayr. More to do in Prestwick town, good rail links to Glasgow. Easy to commute to Dumfries, inland Ayrshire, Culzean Castle & country park, central belt. Can go over to Arran on the ferry from Ardrossan.
Prestwick is a prettier beach town than Ayr.

Entirely this - the perfect spot for a holiday, island hopping and city visiting.

Newton Stewart is beautiful

The jewel in Dumfries and Galloway is Kirkcudbright, a beautiful town with a harbour, castle and art galleries. It’s got beautiful beaches within 5-10 minutes drive or even walking along the coast.
The area around has lots of historic interest and outdoor activities. Bothe Glasgow and Edinburgh are day trips.
