Switch games for 5 and 8 year old?

Looking for game suggestions! We got a Switch recently and they love MarioKart but I’d like to get them another game.

I like the look of Animal Crossing but the fact that the reviews say it’s only good for one player really put me off because they’ll both want to use it.

Minecraft probably too old for 5 year old - even I can’t get to grips with it 😑

I have no idea!!

The Lego games are good! My 9 year old is obsessed with all the Pokémon games too. Mario Party is a good multiplayer game.

TabbyKat87 · 13/06/2022 00:53

Not sure about animal crossing, my 7 year old nephew refuses to play it as he says it's very boring. I reckon he got it when he was about 5 or 6.

Pokémon is usually a big hit. Mario too. Minecraft is huge with that age range, so I reckon they'd catch on quick.

Ooh what’s mario party?

Sonic!

Untitled Goose Game! It's lots of fun, we play it together as a family.

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 13/06/2022 06:25

My 5yo absolutely loves Minecraft.

Throughabushbackwards · 13/06/2022 06:27

Yes, and Minecraft.

RicStar · 13/06/2022 06:28

Any of the Mario games - DS8 has completed Mario Odyssey twice (with help of YouTube!), Pokemom, Kirby, Sonic
There are a reason these are classic kids game characters. Your oldest might like Links awakening but may need to be able to seek guidence from you or the all knowing YouTube etc. Minecraft is amazing and your 8 year old might appreciate it, even if dont play with 5 year old.

Cyclingforcake · 13/06/2022 06:56

DS7 likes Pokémon, any driving game, gummy life and various mario games. Animal crossing and Minecraft not so much.

JimMorrisonsleathertrousers · 13/06/2022 07:07

Animal crossing is lovely but my kids never play it any more. You can only create one Island per Switch so that could be a problem if they both want to play it!

Mario games are always a hit. Minecraft has also stood the test of time for us (although you will need 4 controllers to play it 2 player)

ABlindAssassin · 13/06/2022 07:09

Minecraft is fine for a 5 Yr old. You'll need another set of joy cons though if you want them to be able to play together. The pokemon games are mainly all one player (you can have two players on Lets Go Pikachu but the second player doesn't get to do much).

If you're struggling to work out how to play, there are hundreds of YouTube videos with game walk throughs. This is how my sons learnt!

Mario Odyssey
Mario 3D All Stars (3 games on there)
Sonic colours
Luigis mansion

My 6 year old loves Mario Party and Mario Golf is also good fun. Minecraft is also brilliant though he mainly just likes building things in order to then blow them up with TNT 🤷‍♀️

My 2 are 5 and 8. They both really like animal crossing. They share an Island and both have a tent. They do play it together and take it turns to be the leader. They also like to visit their friends islands and FaceTime them at the same time (this is more the 8 year old),

They love Mario party and this is a great one to play as a family!

DS7 and DD5. DS plays the Pokémon games and Harry Potter Lego.

As a family we love the Mario ones - Super Mario Brothers, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart, Mario Party….we have a few others too. Untitled Goose Game is great fun. There’s some cheap ones in the Nintendo eshop that are fun - we got one called Pikuniku for about 99p that was very good. We had Animal Crossing but got bored of it quite quickly

Twillseeker · 13/06/2022 22:07

My 6 year old is quite bored of animal crossing now. She likes Pokemon games, mario odyssey, mario party. She does play minecraft but finds it harder than the others I mentioned.

CaptainMerica · 13/06/2022 22:29

My 5 and 8yo mainly play minecraft, mariokart, mario maker 2 (i was surprised at that one, but the 5yo has picked it up from his brother, and they like to design courses together) and mario party. Also, they play various games similar to mario party on the Wii.

They rarely played animal crossing once the novelty wore of. The 8yo plays lego games, links awakening, mario, etc, but mostly as 1 player.

Tried Harry Potter Lego and could not make head nor tail of it 🤦🏻‍♀️

We found that you have to persevere occasionally cheat with Google and play for chunkx of time rather than half an hour here and there. We found Sunday afternoons were good. Once you've managed the first year the rest fly by.
