Birthday weekend away on my own

Hi mumsnet.

it’s my birthday in august and as I’m single at the moment I want to go away for the weekend on my own. It’s not something I’ve done before, always been with family or partner, but I’m pushing 50 so fuck it, why shouldnt I.

so I’m after some ideas. Fancy either a city break, or seaside town but not beach holiday. Money not an issue (within reason) so might do uk, might do Europe.

anyone got any ideas or recommendations?

Oh and I’m a bloke, if that makes any difference. I guess it means solo travelling is inherently a bit safer…

My first choice would always be London. I'd book a theatre trip and an art exhibition, spend a lot of time in bookshops and spend the money saved on flights on some fabulous restaurants!

We just had the most fabulous weekend in Malaga and it definitely wouldn’t have been somewhere I’d have chosen until I read about it on here. Loads to see and do or just sit outside soaking up the sun with cheap tapas and cava.

Holidays on your own are addictive, be warned...

Is there a 'thing' you like to do/are interested in? It can be good to build a trip around that. Eg, I went to Paris to see a band, to Edinburgh for the pandas, London for theatre.

Cities - Chester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, York. Berlin, Krakow, Ljubljana, Munich, Reykjavik.
Seaside exploring - Exmoor, Northumberland

Edinburgh in August. Fringe will be back this year. Visit /stay inLeith for the seaside and maybe travel up the coast a bit if you have time

Have just got back from Budapest and can say without a doubt it’s my new favourite city. I loved Seville, Lisbon, Munich and Barcelona but Budapest's a different league.

weather is great, tons to see, really easy to get around and the most fantastic bars and restaurants that are so cheap!

there’s loads of history, and taking some time out at one of the thermal spas is a great way to spend an afternoon

Rome

What sort of thing do you like doing? I love a museum, so I'd go to Stockholm, see the Vasa, mooch around or maybe Vienna. If you like live music, maybe go to a european festival? Or go to Cardiff and do a Dr Who tour and do some museums/ people watching.
If its early August, you could go to Birmingham - lots going on for the Commonwealth games and still tickets available for some events, but also free to view things

Love cities. Architecture, history, museums, art that kind of thing. Live music and food too, so I’m liking these suggestions thanks.

You know, I went to Stockholm when I was a small child and saw the Vasa then, but that was a long long time ago. Might be fun to re-visit it 40 years later…

With your list of likes I can't get away from London! Unless you live there then I would possibly suggest Belfast. But there are so many wonderful places you could head off to.
