Do You Drink Milk?

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 12/06/2022 08:48

I have never liked milk on it’s own - think it probably started with those little glass bottles we used to be given in school where often the milk was warm. Milkshake is fine & I have milk on cereal & in tea.

Most adult humans are lactose intolerant and can only digest diary after heating or processing to break down the lactose.

it is only a few populations that have the mutation which means individuals are likely to retain the enzymes needed to digest what is actually a baby food into adulthood

northwestern Europeans are one such population. The Masai in east Africa are another.

almist everyone else loses those enzymes around the ages of 15-20

in our culture that quite often manifests itself as repeated upset sumacs, and is the first thing I enquire about when a previously good school attender’s attendance suddenly becomes patchy at that age

more than half the time it turns out to be lactose intolerance, which we see as a medical deficiency. But is actually the human norm

AclowncalledAlice · 12/06/2022 09:28

No, just have it in coffee. I don't drink milkshakes or any other milky drink, eat cereals, eat milk based puddings,. Never have done even as a child.

lljkk · 12/06/2022 09:29

I prefer other things but I could imagine drinking a litre (esp. skim, esp. chocolate skim) in some circumstances. Am American so we routinely had milk as a beverage. Teen DS quite likes a cup before bed.

I went temporarily lactose intolerant in all my pregnancies, never felt same about milk or yogurt since.

Yes, I love milk. I have a Velvetiser so drink a fair bit. But can’t go any creamier than semi skimmed. Full fat milk isn’t nice.
I have tried every milk alternative there is and they are all revolting IMO.

FinanceLPlates · 12/06/2022 09:29

Milk can taste very differently depending on how the cows are kept (and how fresh it is).

SpiderVersed · 12/06/2022 09:32

I used to love milk and drink it daily, but in my late 40s found it was upsetting my stomach so I only have an occasional splash in coffee and mostly use (much less nice) barista oat milk now.

That’s interesting. I have often thought that the reason I recoil at it is because I suspect I am intolerant to it, there is some link. My daughter is intolerant and gets the shits if she has a milky coffee for example. I never really made the link until she said it’s the same for me. She was also intolerant as a baby and had exzema due to it

even as a child I hated it the smell and sight of it made me feel queasy. I don’t have it in anything and drink my coffees black now.

BadLad · 12/06/2022 10:01

I have a glass with breakfast, some on my cereal and a cup of hot milk before bed. It's delicious.

Thestoppedfan · 12/06/2022 10:04

Yes I love milk. As a kid I had really bad eczema which was triggered by dairy so I wasn’t allowed a lot of milk. It’s always been a treat to me.

OldTinHat · 12/06/2022 10:08

Never. Not on cereal, in drinks or a milkshake. Ice cream though...!

Same reason. Those vile little bottles at school left out in the sun 🤢

HelloAgainMrbanana · 12/06/2022 10:11

No as it just smells bad to me even when fresh plus I’ve got sensory issues and have been to farms and they smell and everything is muddy and smelly and although I’ve nothing against cows I just look at them and feel like I don’t want to consume a bodily fluid of theirs .

I’ve tried alternative milks and they are ok but none are brilliant. Oat is the best I think In drinks BUT it made me put on weight so I cut it out totally and lost a stone in 4 weeks so it must be high calorie?

BiscoffSundae · 12/06/2022 10:13

No, my kids have never liked to drink it either even when they was little they never drank cows milk on its own.

TheChosenTwo · 12/06/2022 10:21

No, I was allergic to cows milk as a small child and it’s never been a part of my diet ever since.
Not to drink anyway, I eat cheese and ice cream but the idea of chugging a glass of milk does not appeal To me, I don’t eat cereal and I don’t drink hot drinks at all.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/06/2022 10:22

Only in tea if there is no plant milk available, and not full fat.
Dairy milk turns my stomach.

fluffyducky21 · 12/06/2022 10:23

Yes,but it has to be cold straight from the fridge.
I need to up my calcium intake so try and have at least a glass a day.

motogirl · 12/06/2022 10:25

No, milkshake is ok but I drink tea and coffee black

WetWilly · 12/06/2022 10:32

Don’t forget the little blue straws- I love warm milk because of school

LadyDanburysCane · 12/06/2022 10:35

I drink loads of milk. I like my tea and coffee milky and I often have a glass of lovely cold milk when I get home from work. I also take some of my medications with milk - especially the REALLY disgusting ones! As a family of three we get through a very large amount of milk!

reluctantbrit · 12/06/2022 10:35

Yes, not on a regular basis and it has to be just out of the fridge. UHT is the drink of the devil.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 12/06/2022 10:36

I have a latte or a cappuccino maybe once a week. Otherwise I drink my tea and coffee black and have yoghurt with cereal. I make up the dairy with cheese and butter though 🤭

bigbluebus · 12/06/2022 10:44

As a standalone drink - no never. I put this down to the same as you OP. Quart pint bottles of milk forced on us at school. Warm in the summer, frozen in the winter, often with the tops pecked by the birds.

I do have a splash of milk in tea and coffee - can't stand it if it's really milky - and I make my porridge with milk but I'd never order a milkshake or a latte.

Abraxan · 12/06/2022 10:48

No, I don't like the taste of milk and could never drink it.

Those school milk bottles, sat in a warm classroom half the day, then being forced to drink them - urgh. They were vile.

Now I have skimmed milk only, and just a small amount in my hot drinks. I can only eat cereals with a little milk if they are sweetened with sugar to disguise the taste if the milk.

Dh doesn't mind milk but could never drink a glass of it. And dd doesn't like milk either.

FourChimneys · 12/06/2022 10:53

I've not had any cows milk for over 40 years. I have oat milk on cereal occasionally and use it in baking.

Dumle · 12/06/2022 10:53

Yes, I love milk!

Athenajm80 · 12/06/2022 10:54

It's what Ian Rush drinks. He says if I don't drink lots of milk, when I grow up I'll only be good enough for Accrington Stanley.

Sorry, that advert is permanently etched in my brain.

I do drink milk occasionally, mainly just from the bowl after cereal, but only when I'm alone! I do love chocolate milk though. Waitrose and Morrisons do little glass bottles of chocolate milk. Quite expensive for the size but they taste just like the chocolate milk I used to have in France.
