Is it worth going abroad for 3 nights?

loolpp · 10/06/2022 15:33

Basically my partners parents had a short break for 3 nights
Monday-Thursday next week
Flying over to Gran Canaria at 10 am Monday and leaving Gran Canaria 5pm Thursday afternoon
They no longer can go due to ill health
They don't want any money from us and will pay the name change ..only thing is it's only bed and breakfast so we will need spending money for meals etc
Is it worth it ? For only 3 nights ?
It's around 4 hours and 30 min flight
I don't know what to do
Is it worth it?
Im off work next week and partner can get time off if we decide to go
Help ..shall we bother ?

I've done it to Crete for four - worth it in my opinion. But that was before the clusterf*ck of chaos at Mcr Airport....

Testina · 10/06/2022 15:35

How can anyone answer that for you?
Some people will think, “yay - a bit of variety, free!” and some will think, “nah, too much hassle”. And a million things in between.
Only you can decide this one!

We would be travelling from Newcastle airport and doesn't seem as bad but it is a long way to go for 3 nights isn't it

If your flight is on time you'll be there by late afternoon, so that's Monday evening, all day Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday morning before you need to leave for the airport for the flight home. Sunshine and a bit of R&R for just the price of your meals, i'll go if you don't!!

emmathedilemma · 10/06/2022 15:37

for context, my parents live a 4.5hour drive away and I don't think twice about going there on a Friday evening after work and coming back on Monday! And that's more tiring than flying where someone else does the concentrating.

girlmom21 · 10/06/2022 15:37

I'd do it if you can get the time off work. It's a free holiday. I don't see what you have to lose. The flight is shorter than a holiday in Cornwall for us and I know loads of people who go there for the weekend.

loolpp · 10/06/2022 15:37

We get there at 3.20 pm(if no delays )think it's 40 min transfer time ..so at least that would be a night out
And flight back at 5pm Thursday

No, it isn’t. See my previous post… we’re all different. I don’t think it’s far for 3 nights, you so. So, I’d go and you’d stay home.

loolpp · 10/06/2022 15:38

Saying that last weekend I did a 5 hour megabus coach to Liverpool for two nights so at least this time there's sunshine

I have been to India for 3 nights at that was a 9 hour flight and a change in time zone.

i did fly premium economy but I spent the entire time working. I would do it again and not worry about it.

Funkyslippers · 10/06/2022 15:41

Yes it's along way but you're not driving it are you ☺️. You have really good flight times. I'd definitely go. If you have kitchen facilities you could just go to the supermarket and buy stuff for lunch/dinner instead of eating out (or take stuff from breakfast for lunch etc like I do!)

wonderstuff · 10/06/2022 15:42

I flew to New York from London for 2 nights, had a blast! If you can afford the time and expense I’d definitely go.

Onceinawhileuser · 10/06/2022 15:43

Those quick holidays a long way away are a real killer for the environment, but that doesn't seem to have crossed your mind.

KangarooKenny · 10/06/2022 15:44

Yes, go ! I like going away for 4 nights.

loolpp · 10/06/2022 15:45

@Onceinawhileuser well the plane is still going even if I'm not .....

Thanks everyone I'm going to go.
I've got all my bikinis etc
All I need is sun tan lotion and after sun etc

Have they looked at the name change cost? It's not insignificant.

But only you can decide. We've been to Tenerife for 4 nights and I think with hindsight I think it was a bit far, but if you get good weather and get to relax in the sun and have a change of scene, it might be worth it to you. If you haven't been to GC before, it's a good way of checking it out to see if you'd like to go there for a full holiday.

loolpp · 10/06/2022 15:47

@BarbaraofSeville I've never been to any of the Canary Islands.
Normally I go to Cyprus /Greece
I've never actually been to mainland Spain either

That's not how it works.

Ilovechoc12 · 10/06/2022 15:48

Go don’t be boring enjoy yourself !!!!!
bit of fun why not - what would you do instead ?!?!?

I’d love to go!

LondonWolf · 10/06/2022 15:49

I went to Abu Dhabi for five nights once. A friend went to Tokyo for three. I've been to Berlin for two, NYC for three. It's a pretty normal thing to do.

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 10/06/2022 15:49

DH and I go away for a couple of nights at a time and love it. How do you define “worth it”? You don’t need to take loads of clothes, the flight times are short, what’s the hassle part? You get a few days break in the sun, I’d jump at it.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/06/2022 15:51

Oh there's always some fun sponge who gets a dig in about the environment.

I hope you don't have children @Onceinawhileuser because the carbon footprint of having even one child is less than flying to NY and back once a month, so even if those of us who have a couple of weeks in the sun each year confined ourselves to this cold, wet miserable island for the rest of eternity, it would make not a jot of difference to the state of the planet.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/06/2022 15:52

Gah. Carbon footprint of having one Dc is more than flying to NY and back each month.

LeafHunter · 10/06/2022 15:53

Definitely so if. We do a similar trip (to different cities) and it’s always been a good experience.
