Recommendations for somewhere to eat near Paddington

StAgur · 10/06/2022 01:02

I should be grateful for some advice about possible places to eat near Paddington Station on Sunday lunchtime.

I am meeting a friend, who is between flights, so will be coming from the airport on the Heathrow Express, and will therefore have luggage, but we can take a taxi if necessary.

Budget isn't important and I would ideally like to find somewhere with good food and enough quiet and privacy to be able to talk ie not too bustling/busy and background noise.

Please can you lovely gastronomic MN'ers let me have your suggestions?

The Hyde at Roseate House Hotel or The Prince Alfred in Maida Vale

If you like Dim Sum, then Pearl Liang in Sheldon Square is my go-to.

LadybirdDaphne · 10/06/2022 05:42

Well, I'm sure Mrs Bird could rustle up something nice in the Browns' kitchen.

Although I hear he has been taking tea with royalty lately...

The cheese barge though would need to leave luggage at left luggage or similar.

StAgur · 10/06/2022 06:45

Thanks everyone. The Chinese looks fabulous, but sadly only opens in the evening.

I really like the look of the Cheese Barge, but it seems to restrict time at table to 1.5 hours, which would leave us with time to kill, burdened by luggage.

And the other recommendations look fabulous too, but would probably involve getting a taxi.

Has anyone tried The Cleveland Arms, which gets good reviews for its Sunday roasts?

@StAgur From the Contact Information page:

Restaurant Opening Times

Monday to Sunday 12pm to 11pm

There is no online booking between 12pm to 4:30pm on Sunday, please call us on 0207 289 7000 to book your reservation.

(I don't work for them! I used to work round there and have been to Pearl Liang so many times, I didn't think what you said was quite right so I checked.)

StAgur · 10/06/2022 07:44

Thank you so much erinaceus, that's brilliant!

In the drawing room at Buckingham Palace. You can sit next to the bear but don't speak unless you're spoken to. Wear a hat.

notimagain · 10/06/2022 08:01

Can't help with a restaurant, sorry, but in any event second the thoughts of using left luggage if here's anything more than a bit of hand baggage involved and the flights concerned are in/out at LHR.

StAgur · 10/06/2022 09:58

Thanks notimeagain. Do you know if there is somewhere to leave bags at Paddington?

Ah, at Paddington - don't know, sorry.

I was thinking in terms of leaving any big bags out at Heathrow on the assumption (I know) that the flights concerned were in and out of there.

As I recall it all the LHR terminals pretty much all have (pay for) left luggage facilities, T5 certainly used to and here's a link to T3 facility:

BlueKaftan · 10/06/2022 10:14

Aberdeen Steakhouse, of course!

jay55 · 10/06/2022 15:04

There is a left luggage at paddington same company as linked above.

Thank you jay!

I would go to Marylebone High Street if it were me - there are quite a few nice restaurants there - Fischers is particularly good, and an Italian restaurant whose name I can’t remember, but it was very nice!

Or if that’s a bit far there are a few good Moroccan and Lebanese restaurants in walking distance if you turn left up Edgware Road.

Clymene · 10/06/2022 20:34

The Orrery at the top of Marylebone High St used to be fabulous but I've not been for a while.

I except there's somewhere nice in Paddington Basin though?

Karmatime · 10/06/2022 21:08

I went to Bondi Green recently, right by the canal outside Paddington. It was good, nice surroundings and not too pricey.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 10/06/2022 21:12

Just go to Pearl Liang. It’s wonderful. I really miss living just a short walk away…

PainterInPeril · 10/06/2022 21:23

Don't eat too near Paddington, especially if you're having marmalade sandwiches. He might be exceptionally hungry.....

100% the Cleveland Arms OP, it’s great and fairly small so not too raucous generally.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 11/06/2022 07:43

The summer house is a short walk up the canal, that’s quite nice. Pearl Liang is lovely. I’m personally not fussed on bondi green, I find the service hit and miss but it is very photo friendly if you want insta photos.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 11/06/2022 15:44

The Summer House isn’t cheap but it does feel like being on holiday in the south of France.

StAgur · 11/06/2022 19:29

Thank you so much for these suggestions!
