Pillows - at my wits end

I can't find a pillow that is comfortable and lasts. I now have about 10 pillows, can't bear to just throw them out after only a few months' use, but can't sleep on them either.
Real feathers are no good for me due to allergy / sensitivity, so is has to be synthetic. After a few months they are just flat and hard. If you wash them they are hopelessly ruined.

How long should a pillow last?

A good pillow should last for many years. I too am very particular about my pillow. Years of searching led me to this one, which I have had for seven years and absolutely adore. It ticks all of your boxes, and comes with extra stuffing so you can adjust the loft. The gusset around the side is brilliant.

The link is for the Amazon US site, but it may be on the UK site as well. If not, have a google and I'm sure you'll find it somewhere.

I hate a big pillow so but cheap. When they get discoloured and yucky they become dog bedding!

I bought a Simba. You can wash the outer cover. And you can change the firmness & size by removing the foam ‘nano’ cubes until you’re happy with it. Plus it has a cool side & a normal side. Rather ££ for a pillow, but worth it imo.

Beancounter1 · 10/06/2022 19:02

Perhaps I do need to spend far more. The adjustability sounds good - presumably it has a zip or something to open it up?

What about a pillow made of latex? Talalay Latex (I think that's right) is lovely and soft....marshmallowy but supportive, doesn't get thin, doesn't trigger allergies (unless you're allergic to latex!!), dust mites don't like it.

I adore mine, I hope they still sell the same one. Might have to check soonish just in case.

lightningstrikes · 10/06/2022 19:07

I've got the kalm pillow from kudd.ly It is the same premise as above, slightly less money. I love it.

Relyon sell latex pillows (used to be Dunlopillo) which are expensive but last years and are completely worth it. Use a pillow protector to extend their life.

Beancounter1 · 10/06/2022 19:24

Thanks, I will look into latex.

I use feather pillows so can't recommend brand to you but I take them to the launderette for a wash and dry because their machines are bigger so they don't go flat. When I washed them at home they definitely went flat. So maybe just try using a launderette? In between washes I use protectors which I wash once a week in my own machine when I do my other bedding.

HighInTheHills · 10/06/2022 21:20

I have a wool pillow from Baavet and it's brilliant.

They are made out of tiny fluffy 'curls' of wool and the pillow is zipped so you can remove stuffing it it's too big , zhush it about if it gets flat or lumpy. No sheep smell at all, cool when it's hot and warm when it's cold.

And obviously because it's wool then you don't get dust mites etc.

I have the pillow itself, then a thin padded pillow protector on top and then the pillowcase itself.

I bought mine after a recommendation on MN and I love it. I bought it in their clearance section which made it even cheaper.

I've had it for about 18mo now and still as good as new, I'd never buy a synthetic or a feather one now.

I've been looking at their wool duvets too for when my duvets need replacing.

Just to add - if you have loads of pillows, and you happen to be near a dog rescue centre like Dogs Trust, they take pillows and duvets to use for the pets bedding.

I’m extremely fussy with my pillows and I’m using silent night soft like down ones at the moment, love them! So comfortable and keeps it’s shape

TheCanyon · 10/06/2022 21:34

@123Polyanna123 do your buyers know they're used?

Do you tell the people you’re selling to that you e used them for a week beforehand?

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 10/06/2022 21:36

Ooof. Well if I were ever inclined to buy any soft furnishings off Etsy I wouldn't be so now.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/06/2022 21:36

I have a tempur classic pillow. Cost me £50 last year at their outlet shop in Swindon. It's amazing!

Toddlerteaplease · 10/06/2022 21:37

I had a simba but hated it and also didn't like the tempur cloud. But that was more to do with the cost!

Me neither, that’s absolutely rank 🤢

I have had the same problem and finally solved it recently with a buckwheat pillow. You can sort of burrow into it and it adjusts to your shape, it's amazingly comfortable and I'm sleeping much better.

I have this, it's a similar concept to the simba pillow but much cheaper. I used to replace my pillows every 5 or 6 months, but I've had this over a year. I have a soft pillow under it and use it at a slight angle. You can adjust the density by taking out some of the filling.

TheCanyon · 10/06/2022 21:39

@Beancounter1 I'm gonna be honest, I LOVE a bargain. £40 for a pillow, no fucking way. My posture is absolutely fucked after being dizzy for the last 17 months and lowering my centre of gravity 24/7, I know I NEED a neck pillow but the price!!!

A year ago I also had low vit d and everything hurt, especially my head/scalp, so much so that I couldn't actually sleep in bed as my soft pillows felt like bricks. Bought some super soft pillows from next that actually do fluff up when you shake them.

AuntieDolly · 10/06/2022 21:41

I've got a buckwheat pillow too! Had it for years and take it on holiday with me - love it. Took a while to get used to it, but can't be without it now
