Pillows - at my wits end

I can't find a pillow that is comfortable and lasts. I now have about 10 pillows, can't bear to just throw them out after only a few months' use, but can't sleep on them either.
Real feathers are no good for me due to allergy / sensitivity, so is has to be synthetic. After a few months they are just flat and hard. If you wash them they are hopelessly ruined.

How long should a pillow last?

These are brilliant, I’ve had them a while and they kept their shape and are lovely and comfy. Pricy but worth it it you want

After so many years like you I discovered my saviour pillow! I have bought up stock and I have them vacuum packed in my cupboard for future use when my current ones need replacement.

It took me 10 years of regularly changing pillows to find this one. It's not even expensive!

This was my greatest find for the best nights sleep.

We have the Temper pillows with cool touch. They are eye wateringly expensive but after 18 months still feel brand new and are so lovely and cool on a warm night,

Relyon sell latex pillows (used to be Dunlopillo) which are expensive but last years and are completely worth it. Use a pillow protector to extend their life.

This, we are on our second round in 30 years we bought the current incumbents about a year ago and they were about £80 each.

I bought some pillows which I thought were Tempur, with foam bits that you could add or remove depending on what you wanted. Awful, just awful. I bought some Tempur ones that are cooling. Hard and unyielding. Can’t get on with those.

The spare bed has a hotel’s worth of pillows under it that are hopeless for us. The only one I like is a silk one, which goes in the machine and comes out ok.

Most animal rescues don't because they can't be easily washed and then become a massive problem for them to dispose of.

I know that Dog's Trust near me loves getting duvets and pillows to be used as bedding. They have their own on-site laundry and washes any donated items ready for use themselves.

I thought that was the same with most animal rescues? Apologies if I misstated something there.

Our pillows came from The White Company, not somewhere I would have thought of for pillows but someone on Instagram recommended them. They were a special buy so a decent price, not outrageous. They were enormous at first and I thought I would never get comfortable but they have settled to the right size for me and stayed that way. I would definitely recommend.

Another Simba user here. They are the business.

Tempur cloud. As new after 10+ years

Beancounter1 · 11/06/2022 15:45

Wow: Buckwheat, linseed, wool curls - there is a whole world of pillows out there that I know nothing about.
But sadly I can't justify £50+ on a pillow on the off-chance it might be good. If only there was a way to try for a week before you buy.

Say an £80 pillow lasts ten years, that is no cheaper than 10 x £8 pillows that you replace every year.

Buckwheat/linseed sound good, like a beanbag. For side sleeping I like to pummel a little 'dimple' in the pillow for my ear, otherwise I get squashed ears which is uncomfortable after five minutes.

Absolutely and some of those you can't even wash!
And the very idea of a latex or memory foam pillow makes me sweat🥵

Caspianberg · 11/06/2022 19:32

But 10 x8 pillows is just a huge waste to landfill

the £80 tempur cloud pillow I have have for 10+ (probably 13 being more precise), is literally like new. It comes with own thick pillow protector and I add my own protector and then regular pillow case. So three layers to wash as needed.

in laws says before having had more pillows than hot dinners for years, slept on these and went straight home and ordered. Have now had same ones 2 years.

stoneysongs · 11/06/2022 19:34

This is the buckwheat one I have, can't say how long they last as I've only had it a few weeks, but it's a bit cheaper at £36.95

So I bought an expensive wool pillow.

Was somewhat disappointed at first as I thought it was too firm, but I do like a pillow to be quite bulky.

Then I realised I am looking for two conflicting things at once perhaps. A 'billowy' plump pillow that is also quite soft. I guess I can't have both.

It is returnable, but I think I will stick with it.

Anyone else solved this dilemma yet?
