I’ve just been heckled on my run

I never get any comments when running outside normally, but for the first time (in my relatively sleepy town) I heard a very witty teenager shout to me about my weight as I was on my route. I ignored them of course, and actually it spurred me on to do a longer run than I planned (trying to see the positives), but now I feel a bit low. Can you help me feel a bit better about it at all?

As a fellow runner ignore! They are just idiots and probably lazy ones at that!

Been heckled many a time, I now turn round and give the middle finger.

Well done on your run.

helpfulperson · 09/06/2022 19:06

Teenagers are inconsequential and brainless. They don't get why you would be concerned about this. Doesn't mean it's OK at all but it's also not personal.

Coughee · 09/06/2022 19:08

Well done using it to spur you on. The little shit would probably be really pissed off if they realised they actually did you a favour. I know, out of you and the witless wonder, which person I admire more.

Sending you solidarity from another overweight runner 👊

Rude little shit.

If it makes you feel any better, I just got chased by a bull! I thought the field was empty. Luckily it was young and friendly but even so.

TeddyTed · 09/06/2022 19:08

Thanks! @helpfulperson I know, it won’t take me long to get over it really 😀

Fuck them, it's a miserable life if you have to put others down. You're ace.

NotaDiva · 09/06/2022 19:50

@TeddyTed Have we just run the same route? I've just finished a run where a teenage twat skidded his bike in front of me, just so he could tell me I was a fat woman running. I wish I had let it spur me on the way you did - I walked a good chunk of the way after that and am now annoyed with myself.

TattyToe10 · 09/06/2022 19:50

This has happened to me lots over the years, I try not to think about it and brush it off but it's easier said than done! Cheeky buggers! I'm not overweight and I'm flat chested but I've had comments about my "fat arse" and boobs shouted out of vans etc. It's like they're just compelled to say something? The patronising, "go on love" kind of ones, when you're slow and sweaty and knackered are almost as bad. Says more about them than us. Well done on your run today

TeddyTonks · 09/06/2022 19:52

You'll get better every time you run.

They'll probably always be a twat 🤷🏼‍♀️

Disregard.

Exclusionquestions · 09/06/2022 19:53

I hate this. It's a real barrier for women running, especially younger women, which is why it's all the more important that oldies like me continue to do so.

If someone ever says something like this, I just bring and keep the thought, 'your attitude towards women isn't my problem' to the front of my mind.

What an idiot and well done on an awesome run.

SweatyPie · 09/06/2022 19:53

You can't stop these types of idiots - but I'd advise you to wear airpods and listen to some music or a podcast so you can't hear it. Sorry to those who've had bad experiences, I have too and it's feels shit.

rnsaslkih · 09/06/2022 19:53

The person who said this to you is simply a loser. Why else would someone heckle a random runner?

WTF475878237NC · 09/06/2022 19:54

This is why I stopped running so you're braver and stronger than me.

Ahh that sucks 😓

gamerchick · 09/06/2022 19:57

I got heckled going to the gym one morning. By a mother and son smoking dope out of the window Hmm they're idiots. Don't let it get to you.

Hmm. I’ve got two that aren’t. That’s a bit of a broad brush 😂

I am not one to let things go. Teenagers often don’t like confrontation. I’d jog on over and ask them to repeat it as I was sure they’d said something rude and am certain that wasn’t what was intended as they look such a nice lad etc.

UnderTheInfluence · 09/06/2022 19:59

Can you ever imagine a woman abusing a male runner like this? As Germain Greer stated "women have no idea how much men hate them".

Crocky · 09/06/2022 20:01

I have had teenagers shouting Run Forest Run.
Teenagers in the street are mostly best ignored.

TeddyTed · 09/06/2022 20:13

Thanks all, I do feel better, I’m sorry to hear a lot of us have stories of being shouted at. As I say it’s relatively rare to hear anything like that on my route even when I run past the surly teenagers hanging out at the station, I’m usually totally ignored and very happy with that!

LondonQueen · 09/06/2022 20:16

I had a lovely young couple of teens shout at me and call me a whore in the gym car park this morning. I think they just have nothing better to do.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/06/2022 20:18

Pretty much every time I go running I get heckled. Usually by fat old men. Once when I lived near a Butlins and was in a race, running along happily. A massive fat man driving the choo choo train along the road for the overweight Butlins guests who can’t be arsed to walk I’m overweight but at least I was running in a race.

SummerHouse · 09/06/2022 20:20

I got "soggy tits" from some child. I actually double backed to have a chat with him but he dropped his bike and legged it. 😂

trilbydoll · 09/06/2022 20:27

I don't run outside partly for this reason, mainly the very real fear of being murdered by a policeman. I feel much safer on a treadmill. So you're braver than me!

Mariposista · 09/06/2022 20:33

I’m so sorry OP. I am a runner and every time I see someone out running who is clearly quite new to fitness, I always give them a smile or encouragement. Ignore the twat and keep up the good work!

Veol · 09/06/2022 20:52

I expect they are feeling inadequate because they feel out of breath after a minute of slow jogging.
