Do you think most people can become attractive with the right effort/money?

Somewhat inspired by the threads on here and conversations with friends about how to look more polished / glamorous. Also because I've been feeling a bit rubbish about my appearance recently and I'm wondering if there's some hope out there!

Do you think most people can become physically attractive if they put effort and/or money in?

By attractive, I don't mean supermodel gorgeous but generally nice looking. Someone who doesn't necessarily turn heads but you'd think of as fairly pretty. I'm also thinking more about smaller changes like eating well, getting good haircuts and even small amounts of filler/botox, rather than completely changing your appearance with cosmetic surgery to the point you're barely recognisable.

Yes I think so. Its amazing really what facials, good haircuts/haircare can do. Going to the gym etc. Just look at celebrities before and after fame.

However it is a lot of maintenance and it's whether you can be bothered with the upkeep. There's no harm in eating better, upping your excercise and just generally taking care of yourself. But sometimes I just can't be arsed with skincare or haircuts

Yes of course you can. Just being well groomed and looking fresh. The devils in the detail. Clean tidy hair, clean polished nails, well ironed clothes, polished shoes. Looking put together so even wearing a nice silk type scarf with a jacket to give nice finish. Have a look at people in the street. Think to yourself what it is that makes them look put together and copy it. Go to make up counters ask them for advice and samples. Christian Dior counters are good, more understated than heavy night out look. Lots of stuff on internet and social media for how to dress nice with clothes you already have. Make small changes gradually so they become a habit. Every morning for example start the day with a cup of boiling water and slice of lemon - really good for you. Slice a lemon and keep slices in freezer to stop them going off. Remove make up every night x

How many people do you know who put it lots of effort into their appearance only to look dreadful? None!

Yes - but dodge the filler imo, it can go really wrong.

Also getting the help of a stylist can help you declutter your wardrobe and have some good quality staples and every day go to outfits. Investing in good quality clothes is also worth considering I find whistles good either new - or via eBay.

XenoBitch · 08/06/2022 20:17

Possibly, but it depends on attitude too. My self esteem is so poor, I don't see the point in even trying. It would be attempting to polish a turd.

Well, I think the whole fake tan/fillers/massive fake eyelashes look is dreadful and I'm sure it takes a long time to do.

DogsAndGin · 08/06/2022 20:20

Yes definitely! And I’ve known people who aren’t traditionally ‘attractive’ but their personalities are so sparkly they are loved by everyone

Cherrysoup · 08/06/2022 20:21

Do you mean like that 10 years younger programme? New teeth and several stylists later? Heck, yeah! Trouble is maintaining it, I’m fed up of dyeing my faded eyebrows and worrying about cover my grey hairs, life is too short.

declutteringmymind · 08/06/2022 20:25

Definitely. It's amazing to watch how some celebs really glam up, or reality tv stars change when they have some money and access to the best treatments/doctors.

CaribouCarafe · 08/06/2022 20:27

I know it sounds naff but a lot of what makes someone attractive is their demeanor and confidence. The way someone "wears" their face and their body. I've met people who look good in photos but aren't as attractive in real life because they gurn or pull their faces in a funny way or have terrible posture.

I think pretty much any outfit can look good if the person feels good wearing it (so long as it fits them! Too tight is the absolute worst).

But overall just simple steps like finding the right hairstyle, wearing a hint of mascara, a tinted lip balm, and concealer (where discolouration may appear) is usually sufficient to make someone look like a bit more put together and a bit more conventionally attractive (Nb I definitely don't take all these steps each day and wouldn't want to!). I think foundation and heavy eyeshadow can actually produce the opposite effect unless done well - in fact foundation can highlight wrinkles!).

So in conclusion I don't think it takes much money, but depending on your personality it can take effort to appear attractive.

Kanaloa · 08/06/2022 20:40

To be honest I think most people are generally pretty pleasant looking but just hard on themselves. I rarely see a really ugly person, I think most people look nice.

But yeah, anyone can improve how they look and look more groomed if they have lots of money to visit nice hair salons, get eyebrows and lashes done, things like that.

I agree with this actually, I very rarely see someone who I think is unattractive and I think most people fall into the average looking category (and I mean that in a nice way!). I’m still so hard on myself despite that.

Yes! It's me
I'm not naturally pretty but have nice clothes and try and keep myself slim ish . I'm lucky to have a nice hourglass figure ! I always make an effort with my hair and light make up and wear nice clothes ..
I think it's tricks people into thinking I'm naturally pretty ..

No one is actually ugly but things like being overweight and not wearing nice clothes or bothering with your hair make a difference to your overall appearance!

Basketet · 08/06/2022 21:13

Botox and fillers can make you look older than you are IMO. I'd dodge trying those out.

I get fillers (they look very weird and unnatural), but why Botox? I've been considering having a bit on my forehead, as I've started to get frown lines from clenching my teeth at night. The frown lines are annoyingly ageing, make me look grumpy, and I don't have any other wrinkles despite being 36. I was still getting ID'ed regularly until a year or two ago when those lines got much deeper. What am I missing re Botox? Why is it ageing?

GillyGumbo · 08/06/2022 21:30

Wow, so bothering with your clothes, hair and make-up are all undone by being overweight? I know plenty of overweight people who always look amazing and I don't notice their size.

NannyGythaOgg · 09/06/2022 00:37

There's also the 'other' side - Money/Power makes people attractive to others so often

Why else would anyone bed ????? (fill in the gap, we all know plenty of candidates) One big example would be Trump

Boxowine · 09/06/2022 02:49

No Botox/ fillers. Or even dyeing hair. But a good haircut and thought out accessories go a long way. A little effort on your physique helps too. You don't have to go high maintainance but you should care about how you look to you.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/06/2022 02:54

Yes. Case in point. Fix teeth, work out, fake tan. Job's a good 'un.

Do you think most people can become attractive with the right effort/money?
valerianaofficiana · 09/06/2022 07:15

Yes, but key starting point is getting to or maintaining healthy weight.
Understanding what suits your figure and dressing accordingly, never being driven by trends.
There are so many people who are doing massive dis-service to themselves by believing that they must be on-trend at all times and quite frankly, looking like bags of spanners in process.
Good skin can be achieved if enough money is thrown at it, same with hair.
Simplicity is the key, quality and simplicity equals elegance.

blobby10 · 09/06/2022 09:22

In my experience its the happiest people who look 'best' - if you have a genuine smile coming from deep inside, it doesn't matter what your hair or makeup or clothes or figure look like

Sqeebling · 09/06/2022 09:23

Haircut, make up and clothes

12Thorns · 09/06/2022 09:24

Every one is attractive to someone

Lolly1987 · 09/06/2022 09:28

Yes it can improve the way a person looks but in my opinion you can always tell who is naturally good looking/ beautiful and who is just wearing good make up/ hair extensions/ filler. You can't buy a beautiful face no matter how much make up or surgery you have.
