Can I destroy these tax returns?

I promise I am a capable adult 98% of the time, but my brain is scrambled!

I was previously self employed but now employed for a few years. I’m trying to slim down my paperwork and get rid of expired tax documents from that time period.

I have documents from the 2015/2016 year, that was filed and paid in January 2017, can I destroy the documents? That to me is the five years have passed this year, but my friend is saying I need to keep them one nore year and now I am frazzled!

thank you!!
