(I know there is a forces section, but I wasn't sure if the Merchant Navy is classed as forces
DD15 is attending her school sixth form taster session today, but is unsure as to what she wants to do. She attends a private school on a full fees bursary which will continue on to sixth form if she meets the grades. Up until now there was never any question as to whether she will get the grades needed (6 and 7s), but according to DD she is only just scraping 6s in her recent end of year exams - I have to wait a couple of weeks for the report before asking any teachers for their opinions. These exams were GCSE papers (she is Y10) so I am trying to reassure her that if she can get those grades now with not a lot of work then with a bit of targeted work she will be fine next year. However, I also think she is bordering on depression as she can become very anxious and has minor self harm scars.
So, after setting the context, DD has now announced that she wants to join the Merchant Navy. She volunteers on a river boat during this summer and last where the boss is ex navy and I think it is him who has planted the seed. Obviously if it is what she wants to do then I will support her - except I don't know anything about the MN so don't know how to support her! She is going for a look around sea cadets next week, that is as far as we have got!
Can anyone offer any opinions please?
