Sweet Caroline by Rod Stewart

Caught a little bit of LW today at lunch time with Penny Lancaster.
Skirted around the bad performance of the song on the jubilee day and said that it was because Rod was suffering from COVID which he caught in Las Vegas.

If this was the case - then he would have been prevented from travelling to the UK and should have prevented him from performing at all, surly?

He had covid at the jubilee?

BlanketsBanned · 08/06/2022 14:03

Didnt he have throat cancer before, poor guy, I saw him a few years ago and he just couldnt sing or dance around anymore really

CatrinVennastin · 08/06/2022 14:03

Maybe covid after effects made his voice sound odd?

He still looks like a desiccated budgie though.

Shittest song in the world too

BlanketsBanned · 08/06/2022 14:07

He has had prostate and thyroid cancer

I would have liked see Sir Rod as part of a duo or trio of legends, belting it out together.

My dream team would be: Rod, Tom Jones, and Chris Rea.

Or maybe they could have got Guy Garvey (Elbow) back on to do the vocal heavy lifting.

Or just had Guy Garvey and Chris Rea. Grin

It was horrendous most of us could do better pissed on karaoke .

The problem was all voices suit a certain type of song and his didn't suit this he murdered it.
The wrong song for him not so much about his ability to sing .

It was so awful it was embarrassing. Same with Diana Ross. They were huge stars in their heyday but should retire quietly and let the newer talent carry the torch.
Just glad they didn't wheel out the Rolling Stones!!

Nooo the Stones are amazing live, MJ can still dance all around the stage and RW is really entertaining

ThoseFiveWords · 08/06/2022 14:44

I don’t think it was bad. It was just very different from the original as Rod Stewart has a much softer voice. I saw him in concert many, many years ago and he sounded the same, it’s just his voice.

I would presume he has been responsible about travelling and being around people if he’s had covid after he was very outspoken, bordering on being a bit preachy about vaccinations.

eggandonion · 08/06/2022 14:45

It would have been great with lots of fabulous old stars doing a slightly inebriated singalong of Sweet Caroline. Like 2.00am at an Irish wedding, followed by Rock the Boat.
I love a bit of Rod.

Should have been Rod, Jane and Freddy - would have done a better job!

Some people just don't know when to hang up their dancing shoes.

Clawdy · 08/06/2022 18:42

Awful rendition of a song I've always liked - that line "Good times never seemed so good...."

DorritLittle · 08/06/2022 18:45

I thought Rod was good and looked great for his age. But I dislike Sweet Caroline. He said he was forced to do it by the BBC. I was not clear why... There were a lot of things about the concert I found perplexing.

I think there was a vote on Radio2, it was a terrible choice and difficult to sing, but he did his best. They should have asked Neil Diamond to come over.

Mamamia7962 · 08/06/2022 19:05

I have said this on another thread, but after he sang Baby Jane you could see him take a deep breath as if he was really nervous about what he had to do next. He told the crowd that the BBC made him sing Sweet Caroline and asked them to sing along to make him feel more comfortable. He also had to keep it as a surprise so wasn't allowed to rehearse it which he wasn't happy about.

I think in the circumstances he did the best he could with a song he wasn't happy about.

Sparklingbrook · 08/06/2022 19:08

I think he should call it a day now, but there's a lot of bands and singers I feel that way about. Let us remember them in their prime.
No idea re the Covid.

He could have changed his name to Neil Platinum.

BlanketsBanned · 08/06/2022 19:10

Neil Platinum, genius😁

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 08/06/2022 19:14

I just watched it and didn't think it was that bad?

Sparklingbrook · 08/06/2022 19:16

He could have at least sung (or attempted) 'Do Ya think I'm Sexy' in his tight leggings and wiggled his bum at the Royal Box. Grin

woodhill · 08/06/2022 19:20

Wrong song for him

George Ezra or Elbow Guy could have done better

The amateur band we saw at a local event sang it better

Or Paul McCartney. Thank god they spared us that horror
