Would you got to Spain for a day?

newbornbubble · 08/06/2022 09:34

DH birthday next Friday and I have been looking at going to Spain just for the day really, we would land at 11:55pm Friday then have the whole day Saturday then fly back at 7am Sunday.

DS is only 8 weeks old so I wouldn't go any longer than that and the kids have school etc.

Is it a waste of time ?

Maybe if it was just me and my husband but no way with a child in tow. All the logistics for one night! Plus travelling by air at the moment is not a great experience.

Branleuse · 08/06/2022 09:37

I wouldnt for a day, but a friend of mine did a weekend in majorca recently and said it was a brilliant cheeky little break.

Id feel like only one day would be stressful with airports etc and not much sleep

newbornbubble · 08/06/2022 09:37

Sorry DS would stay with his nanny! (Who is dying to have him overnight)

With the way the airports are at the moment, I don't think I would as I wouldn't be 100% certain we could get back.

Hoppinggreen · 08/06/2022 09:38

Total waste of time as far as I’m concerned and I love Spain.
Plus with recent airport issues and flight delays you could end up there for a lot less time than you think.
Depending on where you are going even if you do land at 11.55 it will be an hour or more later when you get to your accommodation, then you will need to be at the airport at 5am minimum on Sunday so factor in travel time there too.
And with an 8 week old ? (Assuming you have a passport).
Crazy

JessicaPeach · 08/06/2022 09:39

I wouldn't because it's still 2 nights away, if you are going to be away 2 nights you may as well have at least one of the days either side

zafferana · 08/06/2022 09:39

No, I wouldn't go all the way to Spain if I only had 36 hours - not least because of the problems with airlines, airports and delays at the moment. Could you not find a lovely country house hotel nearby, for instance? I'd find that less stressful, if it were me, and I knew I needed/wanted to get home to my tiny baby and not be worrying about a cancelled or delayed flight. Plus, if you're massively delayed on the way out, you'll just have to turn around again immediately and come home!

Hoppinggreen · 08/06/2022 09:39

Even with just the 2 of you it’s a bit crazy

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 08/06/2022 09:43

With the airport queues at the moment I wouldn't as the hassle factor would be too much. If you have a nanny couldn't she/he have the baby for a bit longer so it's worthwhile for you?

MermaidEyes · 08/06/2022 09:44

I'd find that too stressful for one day. As soon as you get there you'll be thinking of coming back. Travelling is exhausting, even if it is only Spain. I'd do the full weekend or not at all. But then me, personally, could never have gone away and left my 8 week old baby at home.

StageRage · 08/06/2022 09:44

Yes if there was something very particular I wanted to do, e.g fly to Seville, dinner somewhere, Alcazar visit , carriage ride through the park, tapas, dinner, lovely hotel.

But I would be wary of current air travel chaos, and also time of year / heat / siesta times and when things would be open and shut.

StageRage · 08/06/2022 09:45

Oh, and I would not have left my 8 week old.

Twizbe · 08/06/2022 09:45

Nah, you have an 8 week old. If you're getting time away from the kids you'll want to maximise the sleep.

Find a nice local hotel (also useful if DS doesn't like his sleep over - both mine had horrid witching hours so couldn't have done this even if I wasn't breastfeeding)

ChanceNorman · 08/06/2022 09:46

I've never gone abroad for a weekend, never mind a day. I know plenty of people who do 2 night city breaks in Rome, Barcelona etc but the amount of travelling and the rush of only having two nights isn't worth it for me.

I'm a fan of short breaks but 3 or 4 nights minimum for us, any less than that and I'd rather stick to the UK.

darlingdodo · 08/06/2022 09:47

A bit pointless. Why not find somewhere special locally where you won't have to spend 8 - 10 hours of your special weekend in airports/on a plane.

Cleothecat75 · 08/06/2022 09:48

Where are you planning to sleep? I’d be knackered and that wouldn’t help me relax. I’d want an earlier flight on the Friday night and a later flight on the Sunday and then I might consider it, but with those flight times, there’s no way. If you are going, you might as well make it a full weekend, rather than what you are suggesting.

gertrudemortimer · 08/06/2022 09:49

No way right now. We've recently been on holiday and both flights were delayed 3 hours we were lucky to get away at all! The flight back arrived as an empty plane, they cancelled the flight to arriving passengers but it was still delayed 3 hours because there was no staff to take the plane out on to the runway. Airlines and airports are a shit show right now it took me a full day on holiday to get over the stress of Manchester airport. No food in any of the shops that were open but still queuing for the last remaining scraps of food, nowhere to even sit down in departures, check in queue 1 hour 30, no food on plane, 2 hours to get a seat and 2 pints in one of the bars. Other passengers arguing with other groups of passengers everywhere. I don't think this even describes how awful it was haha

FrecklesMalone · 08/06/2022 09:49

I thought I was pretty easy going leaving my 7 week old while I went for a night out. Could imagine leaving them over night. They would be wondering were the fuck you were.
Have you not read about all of the people who are stranded across Europe taking more than a weekend to get back?!
It would be much more relaxing to go to a nice hotel nearby and be pampered.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/06/2022 09:55

Seems a lot of cost for little reward. You're paying for 2 nights in a hotel and flights for one day in an unspecified place in Spain. I suppose where you live and where in Spain you're looking at makes a difference, are you talking about London to Bilbao, or Edinburgh to Malaga because there's quite a difference in travel time between the two.

For the same cost, you could fly out early on day 1, have most of day 1, all of day 2 and if you flew back in the evening of day 3, you'd have 2 evenings and 2.5 days to see stuff.

I'd look at flights again and find somewhere where you can fly out early morning on day 1 and back late in the afternoon on day 2 so you have more time in the destination. Or could you go on the Eurostar to Paris?

We have done short breaks, but we've always flown out early on day 1 and come back late on day 3 so it seems a lot more worth it.

But then again, if your main interest is lots of Spanish hotel room sex, then go for it.

Favouritefruits · 08/06/2022 09:56

I wouldn’t bother going for a day, the airports are chaos at the moment with delays. I went a fortnight ago it was terrible, no toilet roll on the plane 3.5 hour delay, security took 2 hours, comming home we were sat on the plane waiting for staff to bring the steps, I could go on and on with the problems we had but I definitely wouldn’t go for the day.

CHiSOCG · 08/06/2022 09:56

Yes I’ve done it with work! We flew into Barcalona Friday afternoon had the afternoon, dinner, evening out and then flew back Saturday!

Noname1999 · 08/06/2022 09:57

No. At best it will be tiring, at worst you'll be caught in some airport/airline snafu and be stuck.

skgnome · 08/06/2022 09:59

In theory yes… but landing at 11:55, even if it lands on time, you have carry on only and are the first through immigration… and less assume you minimise travel time and stay in the airport…
there's no way you’ll be in bed before 12:30 - 1 am
and then on Sunday you need to be in the airport at 3:30? Again, assuming you’re in the airport 3am wake up?
the lack of sleep would put me off…
but if you cope well with no sleep or there’s a special event you want to go, then go for it

Mariposista · 08/06/2022 09:59

I really would! I love an adventure. I know someone who went to Ibiza for the day once (as in 6 am flight there, 10 pm flight back the same day).

StageRage · 08/06/2022 10:03

When you say landing at 11.55, I assumed 24 hour clock and therefore an afternoon and evening to be enjoyed?

If it was midnight, no way. Late to bed, ridiculously early start to catch 7 am flight on Sunday…
