Would you got to Spain for a day?

DH birthday next Friday and I have been looking at going to Spain just for the day really, we would land at 11:55pm Friday then have the whole day Saturday then fly back at 7am Sunday.

DS is only 8 weeks old so I wouldn't go any longer than that and the kids have school etc.

Is it a waste of time ?

Usually I might but no way in hell with the current airport situation

potteringinmysocks · 08/06/2022 10:58

Possibly I would. I'm in Spain at the minute. I often come for 2 or 3 nights. But I live close to a small airport that hasn't had the issues some of the bigger airports have had, and where I stay is only 15 minutes from the airport in Spain. So I'm door to door in about 6 hours. We get the 6.30am flight so am by the pool by lunch time!

Fly with Ryanair with hand luggage only as that's cheapest option. Amazon sell bags that are the exact right size for £15 and it's surprising what you can get in there.

If you're happy leaving baby for 2 nights then go for it! There is no reason you should feel guilty for leaving baby for a couple of nights with someone they're familiar with. Enjoy!

Also landing at midnight, by the time you've got to the hotel and checked in, it'll be late without any delays (unlikely at the moment) So not the best start to a holiday as you'd presumably want to get up early to see the city/town.

Flying back at 7am you'd need to be at the airport by 5am, although at the moment airlines are saying 3 hours. So 4am. To get there you'd need to get up at about 3am, to get ready and get taxi etc.

Sounds like a bad idea.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 08/06/2022 11:01

No way!

potteringinmysocks · 08/06/2022 11:01

I'd get a later flight back on the Sunday though! Even if the lunch time one so that you can enjoy the Saturday night without having to be at airport at 4am! Remember if flight is 7am, you have to be at gate at 6.30am and be at airport few hours before to get through security

OldWivesTale · 08/06/2022 11:04

Not currently due to the airport chaos. And the fact that you might be in a queue for 3 hours at passport control (nothing to do with Brexit of course...)

Deadivy · 08/06/2022 11:13

I recently flew to Italy and back for a short period, which I've done before tons of times and is doable. This time 12 hours of my time was spent in an airport flying out and then another 12 hours to fly back, both ways due to delays. Defo wouldn't do it in the current situation. Getting through security was fast but every airline had huge delays and in fact I lost my first day there.

Twizbe · 08/06/2022 11:21

The weather is improving and you can put off a sun holiday until things calm down or you have longer.

Even if you do go you're not going to get much sun time anyway. You'll spend most of it in the airport or knackered.

Swayingpalmtrees · 08/06/2022 11:26

for 3 hours at passport control (nothing to do with Brexit of course...)

Ummm, the problem in Spain is not the passport controls, they were a breeze (and in most of Europe as we have travelled a lot this year and no problems whatsoever) but the most enormous queues for security that took nearly an hour and 20 minutes just to get through. That is the problem.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 08/06/2022 11:31

I would. We had a works trip to Malta for the day once. Flew out super early. Got the last flight back.

But airports were running smoothly then ....

JustSaying101 · 08/06/2022 11:32

Not currently with the issues surrounding air travel, as you might experience delays and cancellations. I would personally just stick to a nice overnight break in the UK somewhere.

berksandbeyond · 08/06/2022 11:34

I wouldn't bother. But then I also have never left my nearly 4 year old over night so maybe don't listen to me 🙈

KitKat1985 · 08/06/2022 11:37

Way too much stress, hassle and cost I would say for one day. Can you do something nice in the UK instead for one day?

Sponge19 · 08/06/2022 11:39

Not with the airports the way they are. They’re chaotic and you don’t know whether you’ll get back. And no way would I consider leaving my 8 week old to go abroad

Eyesopenwideawake · 08/06/2022 11:40

Many years ago I did a day trip from Ireland to Spain to see the Grand Prix. Flew out about 7am, got home at about midnight, just in time to watch the highlights!

Bramshott · 08/06/2022 11:42

No, I'd get on the Eurostar to Paris for a lovely lunch.

3amAndImStillAwake · 08/06/2022 11:43

When would you sleep?

If someone was offering to take my 8 week old overnight I'd be driving to the nearest hotel, ordering room service, and sleeping for 12 hours straight.

But if you want to go away, I'd do a UK break - drive/get the train one morning, come back following morning?

Swishswish26 · 08/06/2022 11:57

Absolutely no chance. Two nights away would be my absolute minimum. Flew to Spain last week and had a 95 minute queue at security and a delay. Simply not worth it at the moment with the way the travel industry is. It’s beyond stressful.

LaFloristaCalista · 08/06/2022 13:27

I've been away twice in May and every trip has been delayed/cancelled/rescheduled. I would not bother for just one night

Notjustabrunette · 08/06/2022 13:43

Feels like a big carbon footprint for one day.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 08/06/2022 13:44

Only if I lived in Portugal near the border.

cathyandclare · 08/06/2022 13:51

Pick where you go if you want sun. We're in the Pays Basque at the moment and it's cold and rainy!

Testina · 08/06/2022 13:55

I was thinking “how would have more than lunch?!” but you don’t actually just mean in and out same day.

With flight situation as is and an 8 week old baby - no.

Baby aside, I would do this for a specific event I wanted to attend. Otherwise it seems a total waste of money. The money would stop me more than the practicalities.

TheChosenTwo · 08/06/2022 13:58

For a special occasion, ie a big wedding that I couldn’t extend and make into a holiday, or for a funeral or something.
Not in your circumstances though, too much time taken up with travel and possibly delays given the current situation would mean I wouldn’t even consider it at the moment.

Good on the people who wouldn't leave the baby? Its being cared for by family, not left alone. The op wasnt asking for views on this but guess its too tempting to include it anyway 🥱🙄

It's relevant because it is a factor in the pros and cons of a one-day trip - that flight cancellations are meaning people are delayed by days coming home - and surely having a tiny baby is a factor when considering the risk of that?
