Fanfiction writers please talk to me

So I have recently got REALLY into a TV series and have some ideas for fanfiction rattling round in my head. I've been reading loads of other people's fictions and would love to try writing my own.

If you write it, how long do you normally spend writing, and how often? Do you just type away at a laptop or do you use dictation software or similar?

I feel like I can write chapters and chapters in my head while I'm sitting in traffic or out running but then when I sit down to write it, it's slower and more frustrating.... I think my "head" writing skims over the awkward parts of the sentence construction and makes it sound much better than it does when I have to write it for real.

How much do you edit? Do you tend to cut loads out?

And finally, any advice on where I might go to find the rest of the fandom? It relates to a show which finished about 10 years ago. People are still posting fics on An Archive of Our Own, but they aren't getting many comments. I've spotted someone on Twitter who wrote a couple of AMAZING fics years ago about these characters, I am hoping she might follow me back so I can DM her. But where do fanfic writers tend to hang out and swap ideas now?

I would really love to find someone to proofread what I've written, especially as its set in 1990s USA and I am sure it is full of awful clangers and unamerican figures of speech.

Archive of our own is the most up to date (I think) but some shows just don't have a current "fandom".
Popular writers often switch to a more current fandom.
Tumblr is popular but not arranged in the same way.

Lots of fanfic writers on tumblr and Twitter, depending on which show it is - have you tried searching for the show as a term on either of those? Or playing around with search terms on AO3 to see if there is a key relationship or term that more people are posting under? Sometimes searching for the show yields relatively few results but a search term for a key pairing generates a relatively busy feed of stuff.

I used to write a lot of fanfic, now I write my own stories but what you've said is me to a T. Think of something really great and as soon as I sit down to write it, it disappears. I do find dictating helps sometimes, or just scribbling it on a bit of paper when I think of it.

As for where to find the fandom, tumblr is always a good place to look.

Of course now I want to know the seriesGrin

Thanks I will go and have a look on Tumblr, I've never really used it before so this is new territory for me.

As I have a new username for this thread, I am going to announce without shame that I am attemping to write angsty fic about Ben and Leslie from Parks and Rec. I know. It's an odd way for a menopausal woman to get her kicks. But it's working for me.

I appreciate there probably aren't that many people still wanting to read fiction about this show as it's been off the air for ages, but I'm hoping I might find a few fellow fans out there somewhere on the internet.

I’m hugely into fanfic, I’m not so into fandom at the moment. I think discord is pretty popular but i’ve not done much with it. Reddit has a fanfiction subreddit which is really good and people share their links, it also has specific subreddits for particular shows (never seen Parks and Rec to comment). I also like fandom.com which hosts wikis for different shows and people can comment.

Thanks, I use none of these platforms at the moment so lots of places to go looking for my people
