Just wondering if you managed to get 10,000 steps in every day? I've been going out every day walking for what seems miles and I just keep doing around 7000! Anyone else struggle to get them in. I don't know how much further I can walk !!!

Have you checked if your tracker appears to be counting them correctly? I've not done loads today and have been for a 30 minute walk approximately and I'm tracking just over 10k on my Apple Watch.
Some days I do around 7k and others with an hour walk around 15k

XenoBitch · 06/06/2022 20:08

I struggle too. I fucking hate walking.

Flaunch · 06/06/2022 20:10

Almost every day. Sometimes 16-17k although yesterday I did 1400 😂

I don’t see how anyone with a dog does less than 10k tbh.

HeritageVegetable · 06/06/2022 20:11

10 minutes brisk walking per thousand steps is my rule of thumb. If I do it all in one lump then obviously I'm knackered, but two thousand on morning commute, two thousand on afternoon commute, a thousand at lunch break, two thousand general pottering around and a half hour proper walk in the evening does it.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 06/06/2022 20:12

I usually do about 10k when working a full shift. If I purposely go out walking I probably clock closer to 13/14k. Are you sure your step counter is accurate?

Littlemissprosecco · 06/06/2022 20:13

You definitely need a four legged friend!

LimesandClementines · 06/06/2022 20:18

As long as I go out for 2 x 35 minute walks then I hit it, about 7000 from those two walks and then the rest pottering about.

FruitToast · 06/06/2022 20:20

I've done 15,000 so far today. HIIT workout, housework in the morning and walked to local park with DC in the afternoon. I often walk 8-9,000 on a normal day at work (lab scientist so up and down but not like a nurse) and then the walk to the car park, picking the kids up and evening chores gets me over my 10k threahold. My Fitbit is set at lowest sensitivity I possibly can.

I have an elderly greyhound who prefers short sniffy walks.

BlueberriesFloatingOutThere · 06/06/2022 20:21

I get at least 10,000 steps in a day.

I go for a walk after dinner every evening to top up on steps I do in the day. I can do anything between 2000 and 6000 depending on whether I'm at work or not.

Montgomerymmoose · 06/06/2022 20:24

I have a job where I'm packing orders ( about 4000 a day ) . Both my arms are moving all the time .
I recently bought a Fitbit to replace a old tracker .
The Fitbit is recording me doing approximately 45,000 steps on a work day .
I do walk a fair bit ( and a lot of stepping from side to side) . Clearly it's my arms that are clocking up the steps .
My old tracker had me at a 13,000 steps a day over 2 years . I suspect that's pretty accurate . I walk a lot as I don't drive .
I'd be interested if anyone has any ideas about the Fitbit arm thing !

MegBusset · 06/06/2022 20:25

If it makes you feel any better, there's nothing magic about 10,000 steps. (It was invented as a marketing gimmick by a pedometer company.) Of course walking is brilliant for physical and mental health and more is better.

User487216 · 06/06/2022 20:28

I sometimes do only 2,000 and sometimes 20,000, I'm sure it all balances out

PC20 · 06/06/2022 20:38

I work in the NHS where we have to be 'bare below the elbow' (no watches etc) so I wear my Mifit tracker on my ankle. Just a normal strap it fits on the second last hole. I think it more accurately measures steps than on the wrist. It only comes off to be charged or for a bath. Gives me reasonable sleep data but probably less effective on heart rate.

TheVillageBaker · 06/06/2022 20:42

I usually manage 18k a day but my job means I'm never still. Managed 41k last week on holiday!

rookiemere · 06/06/2022 20:43

I find it difficult when I'm working from home even if I take a 15 minute walk before work (2500) and a half hour dog walking (4000).
But on the days I work I park at a free car park half an hours walk from the office along a lovely canal route , I plug in my audible and easily do my 10,000.

actiongirl1978 · 06/06/2022 20:50

I have dogs and my rule of thumb is 3 miles = 6500 steps.

I generally do 6 miles on a normal day or around 9 miles on weekends though this includes walking around gardening and housework.

I only track the steps when I have my phone with me.

Liebig · 06/06/2022 20:51

I'll just leave this here.

So long as you're not being too sedentary, you're fine. A brisk walk a day, or even just doing some house chores, should be enough assuming you're not gorging on junk food every chance you get.

Calmdown14 · 06/06/2022 20:52

I hear people say they've done 10k in their half hour lunch break. No way I'd record that so I think all trackers are not equal.

My regular walk is three miles (about an hour) and that's 6000 steps.

I need to walk between four and five miles a day to hit 10,000.

The idea you get that just going round the house is impossible to me. I've been out with my mum and done the same walk but she has somehow clocked up 50 per cent more steps so there's big variation

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 06/06/2022 20:53

Just being at work racks mine up

Fitbit and iPhone vary with iPhone being more generous. I go by Fitbit calculations as iphone is generally 2,000 more

Today has been 11,581 so far

Yes, it's a known thing. When wirk pmaces we're doing all the competitions/challenges, people were listing things they were doing to get their 'steps' up (making pancakes!! Etc).

Calmdown14 · 06/06/2022 20:59

41k in steps is nearly 19 miles. I'm a big walker but that's an all day hike unless it records wrist movements

lugeforlife · 06/06/2022 21:05

When I go into the office, yes as long as I do a walk at lunchtime.

When I wfh no - I basically atrophy. Ideally if I did a walk round the block at the start and end of my day I would but despite my best intentions I never do this.

I don't get those who get them from littering around the house. I regularly spend entire Sundays where I don't sit down from 9-2 and I barely get 2k

Both my arms are moving all the time . I work 12 hour shifts . I had to turn off automatic exercise recognition on my Fitbit because it was recording my arm movements as swimming 😂.

JuneJubilee · 06/06/2022 21:13

@PeacheyPeach it sounds like you need to check your settings! Mine needs resetting too, doing the same walks I did with my old one it registers fewer steps.
