10,000 steps

Just wondering if you managed to get 10,000 steps in every day? I've been going out every day walking for what seems miles and I just keep doing around 7000! Anyone else struggle to get them in. I don't know how much further I can walk !!!

I must take very tiny steps, because I can easily record 10000 steps on a relatively unbusy day, just pottering about the house and garden.I’m not really a sitter, but don’t intentionally move either. Weekends, I’m never under 15k, often over 20k. Today I wandered over to the park with my son, went to the supermarket, ran some errands and cooked dinner and finished on 13509. It definitely records accurately as I’ve checked. Maybe little legs are the secret to good health!

Nyman1962 · 06/06/2022 21:21

I just use a standard analogue old-fashioned pedometer.
Much more accurate than all these modern fatbots or whatever they're called. My average is 9k a day or thereabouts. 20k plus if I play golf

PaperMonster · 06/06/2022 21:24

I do. But I’m walking around all day for work.

N0RKS · 06/06/2022 21:41

Yes, every single day
(tiny bouncy terriers, up at 5am)

I am in bed now

Almost every day. Sometimes 16-17k although yesterday I did 1400 😂

I don’t see how anyone with a dog does less than 10k tbh.

What ? I have a dog, walking school runs and seem to click up about 3.5 miles a day and I never hit 10,000. How many miles do you walk ?

gottaloveascamhun · 06/06/2022 21:52

I'm a teacher so very active steps wise- I do about 8k steps a day at work. 3k each way walking to work and then often go to the gym after work. 19.5k steps today

SummerSazz · 06/06/2022 22:00

I pretty much always do 10k (have a dog!). Last week I did 152k for the week as we were away on holiday (average 22k per day). Lots of intentional walking though

Shopgirl1 · 06/06/2022 22:07

Yes, I do at least 15,000 a day, either through 3 walks, or a combination of walking and running. I would often have 25,000 steps on days I run - especially if I’ve also walked to and from work the same day, it’s 4km each way and runs vary from 6km to 12km.

ArabeI · 06/06/2022 22:25

Apparently I did 26, 400 on Friday but I was running. 16, 872 yesterday, shorter run. Only 4,648 today, working mostly from home, some housework and a workout, not recorded, it doesn't always, but 32 done minutes.

ArabeI · 06/06/2022 22:25

Zone minutes, not done minutes.

Stormchaser1502 · 06/06/2022 23:26

I do about 2500 before the school run in the morning.

generally speaking a day consists of 15-20k steps. I park furthest space in car park, make every effort to walk when I could otherwise not etc.

YerAWizardHarry · 06/06/2022 23:30

Its very rare I don’t get 10,000 steps a day. I teach and get in a few thousand walking walk and forth from the photocopier! PE day and some outdoor learning and I’m laughing

ArabeI · 06/06/2022 23:35

I count my zone minutes and recorded exercise as better indicators. I'm surprised at how it can be easy to accumulate many steps when I've had a relatively sedentary day!

PeacheyPeach · 07/06/2022 00:01

Thanks everyone for your replies. I will take a look at my settings!!
I tend to do a 2 mile 30 minute walking workout in the morning at home and then in the afternoon I go for an hours walk. So I have to be hitting the mark surely!!
I am constantly up and down the stairs in the house so im guessing this can be included in my overall count!
I use an app on my phone but obviously don't have that on me at all times ao maybe I need to get a watch!
But like a pp said maybe I don't need to be worried about hitting the 10,000 but just keep being active!!

I find it hard too but I think the quality counts over quantity too. An hour's brisk walk is not 10k steps for me but a day when I'm out and about walking to the train station/changing from train to tube/popping into a shop etc. builds up more steps. The intentional hour's walk is much better for exercise than the shorter bits of walking inside a shop or at home though.

carefullycourageous · 07/06/2022 00:19

If you are walking at average or above average speed for 1.5 hours, you should be doing around 10,000 steps, as 10,000 steps is usually about 5 miles or 8 kilometres, and average walking speed is around 3 to 4 miles/hour.

Plot your routes on google maps - how far are you walking?

ErrolTheDragon · 07/06/2022 00:31

I'd be interested if anyone has any ideas about the Fitbit arm thing !

I've got an Apple Watch, it definitely uses arm swings as a proxy for steps. The distances I record for my distance challenge are from proper walks with the walking or hiking app on which measure the actual distance by gps.
The watch setup advised that if you're doing something like walking pushing a pram then best to put the walking app on as you won't be swinging your arms. It also uses arm swings as a proxy for standing - quite annoying to have been doing jobs moving around the house carrying things but then it nags me to stand up for the required minute per hour.Hmm

Micael Mosleys 30 minutes daily brisk walk would be disastrous for me, I’d lose my fitness rapidly on that little exercise

MsOllie · 07/06/2022 00:49

Never. I hate walking Grin
WFH and my job is desk bound for 9hrs, lucky to get to 2000 steps
I do a 30-60 min spin class most days which hopefully makes up for it

BigSandyBalls2015 · 07/06/2022 07:20

10,000 steps is about 4 miles for me

The 30 mins is not an upper limit - it is about how little one has to do to make a real difference if you are currently sedentary?

LaSavoie · 07/06/2022 07:42

Try the app Active10 from the NHS. Someone here recommended it to me and it’s great.

It is more achievable and it’s better for your heart because it’s about getting your heart rate up.

letsnotdothat · 07/06/2022 07:46

I do 20k steps most days minimum. I do around 5k some days just cleaning the house tbh and no, I don’t live in a mansion! I have toddlers who keep me active as well. I also go on a 5k run most days, 8k on a Saturday so that boosts it. Tend to walk into town rather than drive which is a good 8k steps in total. I don’t struggle to surpass 10k at all.

urrrgh46 · 07/06/2022 07:55

Get a very active dog! 😂 We have one that requires A LOT of walking and we do 16km a day with her at a pace of 9:45-10mins/km. (light hearted - totally know most people can't do this!)

I'd personally recommend that you keep as active as possible with stealth exercise. So park at the far end of car parks, always take the stairs, put in extra trips upstairs rather than "oh I'll get that later" get up and get it now. And put in a dedicated 45 min walk at pace everyday. There are plenty of 3mile exercise walks on YouTube.

10,000 steps is about 4 miles for me

10k steps is 5 miles for me, we must have a huge height/stride difference 😂.

OP, on my days off work I get my 10k in usually by walking at least an hour a day plus normal pottering around. My job is within sports so on working days im constantly on my feet so go way over 10K.

You definitely need the time to achieve 10k if you are in a sedentary job, otherwise nigh on impossible.
