I’ll start off by answering:

No

OP posts:
doodleygirl · 05/06/2022 17:23

yes, normally more, mix of fruit, veg and salads.

emmathedilemma · 05/06/2022 17:24

Easily!
a banana or berries with breakfast
raw carrot and celery sticks mid morning
salad or veg with lunch
apple and sometimes a banana for afternoon snacks
salad or veg with dinner
i eat meat and fish

AuntieMarys · 05/06/2022 17:24

Yes...and more. Loads of veg rather than fruit.

alwaysmovingforwards · 05/06/2022 17:33

Yeah, easily.

dizzydizzydizzy · 05/06/2022 17:34

Yes. I eat about 10-15 a day. I'm not vegetarian either.

Svara · 05/06/2022 17:35

Yes, usually 8 to 10

actiongirl1978 · 05/06/2022 17:35

I eat 10+ most days. And absolutely aim for the 30 variants a week.

I find it easy as I love fruit and veg.

c3pu · 05/06/2022 17:49

I normally have 5 for lunch, usually hit 10 by the end of the day.

doadeer · 05/06/2022 17:54

I have at least 5 fruit and veg a day, more like 8 but I wouldn't say they are all full portions according to the official measurement. Eg if I'm having a salad with broccoli in, it's probably only 3 florets or 1 tomato. But I'm satisfied that overall I eat a lot of veg and some fruit.

Awrite · 05/06/2022 17:58

@actiongirl1978 - I would love to achieve the 30 variants per week. So, so good for your gut micro-biome and immune system.

BuwchGochGota · 05/06/2022 18:01

Yes. Not unusual to eat 10.

My usual breakfast is strawberries, raspberries and blueberries with greek yoghurt in the summer, porridge with fruit (eg apple and blackberry compote) in the winter. So 2-3 portions.
Lunch is usually a salad in the summer, soup in the winter. Again 2-3 portions at least.
Dinner has another 2-3 portions of veg, either as a side (salad or steamed or roasted veg) or in the main dish, or both.
Usually eat a piece of fruit as a snack at some point during the day.

Solosunrise · 05/06/2022 18:01

Lunch here is usually either homemade soup which is packed full of veg (I make it to use up leftovers)
Or egg/tuna/bits of leftover meat with a salad made from a mix of say lettuce, tomatoes, radishes, cucumber, spring onions, carrots, celery, beetroot. Or raw chopped cabbage or any other bits of raw veg.
Dinner usually has at least a couple of veg with it like broccoli/swede/cauli/cabbage/carrot/frozen peas/tinned sweetcorn.
So yes, exceed 5 more days than not.

actiongirl1978 · 05/06/2022 18:06

@Awrite agreed that's why I aim for the target.

I make it up from some random sources: jars of chargrilled pepper and olive and artichokes. This week I bought a Jar of beansprouts from aldi. Jars of beetroot etc.

Plus frozen veg.

Sunflowersinthewind · 05/06/2022 18:09

What counts as a portion is larger than people realise though so I am not sure people eat actual portions

I was just about to say that! A portion of veg or fruuit is about 80g, not a spoonful of peas. Obviously any is better than none but I think a lot of people are kidding themselves

Are people sure they’re having a full portion in these figures? In the yogurt and berries example above that would be 7 strawberries, 4 tablespoons blueberries and 20 raspberries for 3 portions. I earn well and prioritise food but I just couldn’t afford that daily.

Q1w2e3 · 05/06/2022 18:17

Oh I typed so slowly that everyone else made my point for me! 😂

NiqueNique · 05/06/2022 18:17

I certainly eat actual portions. I routinely eat low carb for health reasons so a large proportion of my daily intake is made up of vegetables.

lightand · 05/06/2022 18:18

But I am older and still healthy, so I am doing something right.

As an aside, I no older, well very old people who can no longer eat much fruit. Or veg come to that. It is like their body has had as much as it can take.

Yes - that's pretty much what I eat. I fill the bowl with berries. I grow all three in the garden so it isn't expensive when they're in season.

80g isn't much, a salad tomato is 60g. I'm well aware of what a portion is and answered accordingly.

Roundaboot · 05/06/2022 18:20

Yes, it's quite easy once you get into a habit.

Agreed, doing it all as fruit would get very expensive!

doadeer · 05/06/2022 18:21

I doubt people are accurately calculating portions.

7 strawberries is more than I'd have on yoghurt, I think I'd have 4.

If I was making a dinner like chicken goujons with potatoes and veg, I'm not sure I'd have 3 heaped tablespoons of peas.

NHS website
Cooked vegetables

A portion is 3 heaped tablespoons of cooked vegetables, such as carrots, peas or sweetcorn, or 8 cauliflower florets.

Salad vegetables

A portion is 1.5 full-length celery sticks, a 5cm piece of cucumber, 1 medium tomato or 7 cherry tomatoes.

It’s very easy to find the info on what qualifies as a portion. I only eat a couple of fruits a day, then lots of veg, definitely full portions.
