Meant to be feeding next doors cat but I've been locked out!

My Neighbour asked me to feed & water her cat whilst they are on holiday. I've been going in everyday to look after her but yesterday when I tried the door wouldn't open. There's a Yale lock and a normal lock and it turns out one of the in laws has been round to water the plants and locked the normal lock. I only have a Yale key.
I messaged yesterday and she said she would get the in law to come back and unlock the door. I've tried again today but it's still locked.
This means the cat hasn't been fed or watered for 2 days.
Neighbour doesn't get back until Monday.

I feel stupid keep going to check a neighbours door and not being able to get in but I'm really worried about the poor cat.

What would you do? I've messaged again but not had a reply yet.

How's the cat Op?

Etinoxaurus · 05/06/2022 20:22

Go round op
The family owners and ils are obviously flaky and unfussed. You can’t be certain they’ve fed the cat.

Cuckoo48 · 05/06/2022 20:28

I had this once. Neighbour had to get her cleaner to come over with the key to the second lock. Cleaner was cross at having to drive over (some distance) on a weekend and I was cross at being put in the position - I had asked for both keys but was told I wouldn't need the second one. I didn't offer to catsit for them again.

Freeze some water in an open bowl. Lower it down on a string.

Or post through some ice cubes.

thenightsky · 05/06/2022 20:46

Good the in laws turned up and fed the cat today. Hope you told them NOT to drop the 2nd lock though! Otherwise you'll be back in the same position tomorrow and unable to get in.

Lunificent · 05/06/2022 20:56

I’d be panicked the in-laws didn’t actually come in that they and the owners were not exactly in a rush to get the door unlocked yesterday.

jaynecooper · 05/06/2022 21:22

A cat cannot go without water and food for that long especially if it is an older cat. Can you impress upon the owners that this is urgent now? I think I would be asking the RSPCA or other rescues for advice. Don’t leave it to chance any longer. The cat is without doubt, suffering. Cats need food every day. They can easily become ill and even develop a form of anorexia and that is difficult to reverse. Your neighbours will have a huge vet bill if this is not resolved immediately.

jaynecooper · 05/06/2022 21:28

No. She hasn’t done as much as she can. She can’t just give up. The cat is suffering. Call the RSPCA. Or the police. It is illegal to cause an animal to suffer in this country. No it’s not her fault but it’s not the cat’s either.

jaynecooper · 05/06/2022 21:34

IF YOU DO NOT ACT YOU COULD BE PROSECUTED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY. YOU NEED TO CALL THE POLICE AND THE RSPCA. STOP FAFFING.

bellac11 · 05/06/2022 21:39

Jesus read the thread and stop being so dramatic. The cat is now fed and watered, the OP did what she needed to do and acted appropriately

Stop shouting & read the OP's posts at least.

at this point someone needs to call the police about you, not the cat!

Never get involved with helping this idiot again.

cobden28 · 05/06/2022 22:02

The in-laws who came to water the plants probably thought that you, the cat-feeder, had a set of keys to get into the house to feed the cat. If nobody has been able to get in the house to see to the cat, imagine the state of the litter tray - and the pong !

jaynecooper · 05/06/2022 22:04

Just break a bloody window. 🤬

Bit extreme when it’s been sorted out…..

Glad it’s sorted @Imthekingsmummy !!

Wombat100 · 05/06/2022 23:20

@CrocodilesCry completely agree - the RSPCA are useless. So sad about the dog, it’s awful that no one broke in to save the poor bloody thing. Unbelievable.

Imthekingsmummy · 06/06/2022 08:51

@JuneJubilee 😂😂

Just an update. I went early hours yesterday and the water bowl was stone dry. Literally not a drop of water. The cat either drinks it all (it's a tiny bowl) or they had forgotten to fill it.
Needless to say I filled it and another bowl.

Owners came back last night.

The water was bone dry again? As she's an older cat she probably has kidney or thyroid problems. You think they'd have noticed and have a bigger bowl/ several water bowls.
The owners seem somewhat lax, poor bloody cat.

Beautiful3 · 06/06/2022 13:48

That's a great update op. I'm glad its all sorted and the cat's okay.

My thoughts exactly. If things go horribly wrong next time then you can guarantee poor OP will be blamed

So next time the answer is 'no' or 'not without a FULL set of keys!!'
