Meant to be feeding next doors cat but I've been locked out!

Imthekingsmummy · 04/06/2022 10:13

My Neighbour asked me to feed & water her cat whilst they are on holiday. I've been going in everyday to look after her but yesterday when I tried the door wouldn't open. There's a Yale lock and a normal lock and it turns out one of the in laws has been round to water the plants and locked the normal lock. I only have a Yale key.
I messaged yesterday and she said she would get the in law to come back and unlock the door. I've tried again today but it's still locked.
This means the cat hasn't been fed or watered for 2 days.
Neighbour doesn't get back until Monday.

I feel stupid keep going to check a neighbours door and not being able to get in but I'm really worried about the poor cat.

What would you do? I've messaged again but not had a reply yet.

Glad it's been sorted in the time I took to draw this. It's a reverse adaption of the technique I use to retrieve stuff I've accidentally chucked in the confidential waste locker.

I am a bit stressy and would not settle til seen all well with my own eyes. Would have probably stalked inlaws when they came over as well...not cool but hey ho!

winterchills · 04/06/2022 19:40

Why can't the other person who is watering the flowers feed the cat? If she can unlock it for you to get in she could feed the cat at the same time

I feel stressy too but feel like I've been told to leave it today as the in laws are doing it. I wouldn't feel right going into someone else's house unless given actual permission.

I wouldn't be able to leave it until tomorrow!

Two days without company & possibly food & water!

What a bloody mix up!

Mellowyellow222 · 05/06/2022 10:51

hope The cat is okay?

this thread kept playing on my mind - some pet owners really don’t seem to care that much about their pets.

my spoiled little princess doesn’t know she is born!

felineweird · 05/06/2022 11:17

@Mellowyellow222 ditto!

Hope she is OK today OP

Clarich007 · 05/06/2022 12:38

Did you manage to get into the house, and was the cat ok?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/06/2022 13:42

I've been thinking about this and I'm hoping the poor cat is ok

TigerLilyTail · 05/06/2022 13:44

I’m beginning to think the owners are called Schrodinger.

Gingernan · 05/06/2022 18:15

Aw poor cat,and poor you! Well food you can shove through the letterbox,as to water, how about some ice cubes to lick,or a sopping wet cloth, even some wet grass? My cat loves some wet grass. Sod their floor, you are doing what you can to keep the cat hydrated.

daisydaisy11 · 05/06/2022 18:42

Freeze some water in an open bowl. Lower it down on a string.

😂

HelpIneedsomebodywontyouplease · 05/06/2022 18:52

Just to be clear the Schrodinger reference was 😂 NOT the situation!

I feel quite anxious for the animal & it’s not even my cat!
she is, thankfully, purring away in my knee.

FuzzyPuffling · 05/06/2022 18:53

Somebody may have already said this but ice cubes through the letter box will give the cat water when they melt.

You have been given permission to go in every day. Just go anyway and put 2 water bowls down for the cat.

zurala · 05/06/2022 19:12

Why is no one involved in this situation concerned about the poor cat?

Op, you need to go check the cat!

The poor animal should be rehomed to people who care.

Ddot · 05/06/2022 19:15

As the family dont seem that bothered go and make sure the cat is ok, it's old and cats need to eat regularly. Water is important, put a huge bowl down and feed it. Maybe this is why your neighbour asked you and not them. Take no notice of the family you promised your neighbour not them

ringemoooo · 05/06/2022 19:23

I'd go in today again just to check.
And if possible put two bowls of water down. I always do this for mine even if I'm going to be out for just a few hours as they can easily tip a bowl over - and yes, I suppose they could lap it up off the floor, but I find it reassuring.
Also when the babysitters are in when I'm on holiday I always ask them to top up two bowls just in case.
(Anxious cat mum....)

Love this idea.
But so glad the poor cat has been fed and more importantly, Watered.
I'm shocked that the owners weren't more concerned.
I would have been going out of my mind with worry.
Water is the essential thing, if an animal is trapped indoors like that, with no access to gardens.

Dibbydoos · 05/06/2022 19:52

The cat is a sentient, living being, just like a human.
Please don't be an arse like your neighbour or their inlaws.

If its not solved by today call RSPCA. They can break in - your neighbours will have to pay to mend whatever needs mending.

Sarahddraig · 05/06/2022 20:04

Legally, you can smash a window to gain entry and you have the defence of necessity because you need to feed the cat.

By day 2 it probably was!😂

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/06/2022 11:22

"What would you do? I've messaged again but not had a reply yet."

I would message again, saying they need to get their relative to come round with the keys NOW, otherwise I was going to have to call the RSPCA to get to the cat. And if their relatives aren't there within the hour, call the RSPCA. (If relative lives near enough to come and water plants, they're near enough to get there quickly.)

The RSPCA would have done absolutely nothing in this situation. Nothing.

Just like they did nothing when a neighbour abandoned their dog in their empty house and he starved to death despite it being reported to them. And then failed to prosecute the vile owner.

Hope the cat was ok.
