Starters or desserts kind of person?

I went out to dinner with DH this evening and he wanted to get a starter. Problem is, I don't like starters particularly and asked him not to as I was starting to get hangry, lol! With starters, I feel like everyone has to get one, otherwise you're waiting ages. So DH and I had a discussion about starters and desserts. I'm definitely more for desserts.
Anyone else - starters or desserts?

I always plan to have a desert but rarely have enough room. I know what you mean about having to wait for the main meal whilst someone else has a starter. I get quite upset when I'm hungry!

purplecorkheart · 04/06/2022 09:35

Starter and quite often a starter and a side instead of a main. No interest in dessert. I cannot tolerate people who use hangry as a excuse to not want people to order starters and have no issue with telling them to grow the heck up. Starter people do not tell dessert people not to order a dessert because they are getting tired. Hangry is for babies, toodlers and children

TheFlis12345 · 04/06/2022 09:40

Starters are often the best dishes on the menu! If I am not starving I often order a starter, then a second starter instead of a main so I still have room for dessert.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 04/06/2022 09:42

Def starter for me-

I don't really have a sweet tooth though- the world is def divided by sweet ppl and savoury ppl-I am savoury 100%

Jollyandbright · 04/06/2022 09:45

I’m a starter person DP is a desert person.
i don’t have a sweet tooth at all and never want desert, DP almost always does.
If I want a starter and he doesn’t he will just share a bit of my starter, and I’ll usually have a coffee or a cocktail (almost always an espresso martini) while he has a desert.

We’ve always done this and it works fine for us.

Daenerys77 · 04/06/2022 09:46

Starters are usually disappointing in my experience. I would happily have the cheeseboard and a dessert and not bother with a main course.

SpringIntoChaos · 04/06/2022 09:47

@ClaudineClare I am assuming that @A580Hojas is being snooty about people saying 'dessert' instead of 'pudding'.

They are obviously in need of being revived by smelling salts after their attack of the vapours due to 'such lower class etiquette' 🤣🤦‍♀️🤣

Call it what you like and ignore 👍

Who knew people really call that course "dessert" .

@A580Hojas why wouldn’t someone call it dessert?

NiqueNique · 04/06/2022 09:51

I’m so glad I’ve got the capacity to eat good meals. I can happily have starter(s), main(s), pudding and cheeseboard! As for coffee, I like a coffee after - it’s a digestive aid and also helps to perk me up after a glass or two of wine...

Now I’m hungry and I want to go out to eat for absolutely hours (preferably in Italy!).

actiongirl1978 · 04/06/2022 09:52

I often go for two starters if I don't fancy a main meal which often has far too much food.

Puddings are almost always a let down in restaurants. The only exception is chocolate mousse if done plain.

Hopeful16 · 04/06/2022 10:11

@WonderGirl1112 usually the purpose of a starter is to keep you occupied whilst the chef has time to prepare/ cook your main meal so it may not actually have lengthened the time that the meal took. Obviously depending on the type of restaurant/ cuisine. 🤷🏻‍♀️

RollOnWinter · 04/06/2022 10:11

Desserts every time

Could have been worse - I could have called it 'afters' 😂

I have been known to have three starters. A little bit of many.

LaurieFairyCake · 04/06/2022 10:35

Both for me but no main course

Main courses are always too big for me

haha 😂 We would need more than smelling salts to revive the etiquette police if you did that 🤩

Glitterspy · 04/06/2022 10:51

Starters FTW! Puddings are very take or leave for me.

"Pudding" always makes me think of spotted dick and other old fashioned desserts. Served with lumpy custard.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/06/2022 11:01

It's rude to have a starter if your dining companions don't want one. Have it as a side dish if you must.

I actually think pudding is a less formal way of saying dessert and that calling it dessert is the correct etiquette. I'd laugh if serving staff approached me in a restaurant and asked if I wanted to see the pudding menu!! I always imagine pudding pronounces puddin in a broad accent...

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/06/2022 11:13

Dessert. I have a sweet tooth, cake is my favourite food.

Fifthtimelucky · 04/06/2022 11:59

I rarely eat a three course meal, so I usually sacrifice the starter so that I have room for pudding.

I have been known to have 2 starters, pudding, but no main course.

Now cheeseboard people are the people I really don't get.

Are you James Acaster, though ? 🤣

WeAllHaveWings · 04/06/2022 12:11

Depends where I am eating and who with. Generally we look at the menu and decide together whether we are having starters or desserts. Always works out ok, with anyone who prefers a dessert being ok to compromise sometimes.

AllPlayedOut · 04/06/2022 12:13

Shudders Please never say that again.

I really don't get the appeal of cheeseboards though. I stand by that.
