Starters or desserts kind of person?

I went out to dinner with DH this evening and he wanted to get a starter. Problem is, I don't like starters particularly and asked him not to as I was starting to get hangry, lol! With starters, I feel like everyone has to get one, otherwise you're waiting ages. So DH and I had a discussion about starters and desserts. I'm definitely more for desserts.
Anyone else - starters or desserts?

I hate waiting so normally skip a starter even though they generally are more my type of food. Unless it’s the sort of place you can have two rather than a main.
I don’t have a sweet tooth but DH loves a pud so I normally have the cheeseboard just to keep him company.
Coffee is my bugbear. Just why round a meal off with a £4,50 small half a cup of coffee.

Sswhinesthebest · 04/06/2022 00:33

Starter definitely

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 04/06/2022 00:35

Starter. I don't like puddings really. I'd rather have a coffee.

That doesn't make sense - starters are usually dishes which are quicker to do the final prep on so you can get them sooner than a main course would take, and then they should be prepping that while you're having the starter.

Starters are usually the tastiest part of a meal.

DinosaursEatMan · 04/06/2022 00:57

Neither. Main course, then coffee just to be sociable if anyone else is ordering dessert.

BerkyWithTheGoodHair · 04/06/2022 01:00

Both if I'm out with DH and going the whole hog.

Main and dessert if it's an informal thing with a friend. Possibly just main sometimes, depends.

DinosaursEatMan · 04/06/2022 01:02

I love food, just can’t eat loads in one sitting . A short pause to get home for cake and wine is fine though!

AfroBrit · 04/06/2022 01:22

Love my desserts, but particular about them and don't have/want them often.

However, I'm a starters man and I'd find it difficult being with someone who had a problem with that! By which I mean if you didn't want starter why are you eating half of mine?!? If you that hungry and don't like mine order something else - you may not finish but leave around during mains and I will

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/06/2022 01:24

I prefer a starter with lunch and a dessert with dinner.🤔

I love desserts but rarely get them as they are either too boring or too complicated.

Starter and main, if I'm having two courses. Never have pudding.

YABU to stop your DH though, just because you aren't 'a starter' person!

@SpringIntoChaos I know, it was a bit mean of me but DH was OK with it. He
His eyes are always bigger than his tummy anyway. Plus, we'd had a long day, I was getting hangry and our 10 month old dd was with us so didn't want the meal to be too lengthy.

Maybe DH can have a starter next time if it's just us two :)

Desserts all the way...in fact if I checked out a menu and the desserts were poor I'd go elsewhere!

So many places feel like the dessert menu is an afterthought and take the easy chilled options - I like to see a couple of good hot puddings on offer!

Crunchymum · 04/06/2022 09:07

It's always much, much more likely a dessert will take my fancy. In fact it's rare for me to see a starter and think "I have to have that".

I'd forgo both the starter and dessert for an extra glass of wine though.

dudsville · 04/06/2022 09:09

Mostly i only have room for the main, but I do not have a sweet tooth. I also thinks it's nice to let everyone order what they like, i think meals out are special. Next time you could maybe eat a few biscuits before you go so that everyone can eat what they want.

mum2jakie · 04/06/2022 09:14

Starters!

ClaudineClare · 04/06/2022 09:15

A580Hojas · 03/06/2022 23:17

Who knew people really call that course "dessert" .

What do you call it?

Goodbyecustardtart · 04/06/2022 09:17

Pudding every time!

WhatsHoppening · 04/06/2022 09:18

I love both but would choose a starter. Also a bit Shock at you stopping DH getting a starter! Imagine if he’d said ‘oh don’t get pudding I want to get home for X’ you’d be gutted!

restedbutexhausted · 04/06/2022 09:19

Starter. I have a sweet tooth but I find that eating out in restaurants they just don't have any desserts that sound that interesting to me.

Having said that, I will almost never miss an opportunity to have a creme brulee. In that case it's starter AND dessert 🤣

Xtraincome · 04/06/2022 09:21

Always a starter for me but I am in the minority in my family unless I'm with SIL who shares my savoury obsession.

ODFOx · 04/06/2022 09:22

I have been known to order two starters instead of a main (after having a starter to start).
I can't think of anything on a dessert menu that would make me want to leave room for it.

darlingdodo · 04/06/2022 09:23

Starter every time. Was very happy when M&S started offering main, side and either starter or dessert rather than just dessert with their meal deals. We always used to get the cheese anyway!

Rainyjubilee · 04/06/2022 09:25

How can you not like starters. It’s just a small portion of food, it’s impossible nothing can be on the starters menu you don’t like.

RewildingAmbridge · 04/06/2022 09:25

I find puddings in a lot of standard restaurants overly sweet so would go for a starter or cheese board. If I'm somewhere very fancy main and pudding
