Why is everyone "humbled" now?

I've noticed for quite a while now that every time I read of someone being honoured in some way, or getting a great job, they say they are humbled. Why would they feel humble? Pleased, proud, excited, grateful, sure. It seems to be obligatory now, why? In case the public suspect them of getting too big for their boots? Is this a British thing?

I suspect people say it because a lot of other people say it too. They probably don’t stop to think what it actually means. I agree it’s silly and not really relevant to a lot of the situations it’s being used for

I think it's probably this. If you don't make it clear you're feeling humble someone will pop along to tear you/your achievement down unfortunately.

Well, when I get my Damehood (don't hold your breath), I'll be as proud as punch, and not humble in the least.

I can only think that it may have some scriptural or biblical reference in that the person feels that they are so thankful for what they have and they are undeserving of it or feeling blessed about a circumstance that others don't find themselves in or don't have the means/ability to find themselves in. Definitely becoming a bit overused given the true meaning on being humbled!
