Tell me about Northumbria, places to go, things to see, areas to explore?

We are looking to go away for my 30th and someone mentioned here.

Thanks!

I honestly wouldn’t bother. It’s bleak and cold beyond belief.

Hellocatshome · 02/06/2022 18:33

Bamburgh and Holy Island are lovely along with many other places but be warned if you go in the summer it is usually heaving.

ProfessorLayton1 · 02/06/2022 18:34

Depends on the weather, beautiful beaches , castles, good pub food. We were there last summer and had a glorious week. But the weather was fantastic..

CavernousScream · 02/06/2022 18:34

Northumberland is massive. Coast or country? Lol at the idea that it’s just bleak and cold. I mean, don’t camp at Hadrian’s Wall in November, but it’s not like that everywhere all the time.

AuntieMarys · 02/06/2022 18:34

We are planning a visit in September...2 adults

cleareyesfulhearts · 02/06/2022 18:34

It's a wonderful place, I love Bamburgh (there's a great fish restaurant there), the walking, the beaches, the towns, Lindisfarne, the fish and chips, Jolly Fisherman at Craster, the people...wish I was there now!

Fuffedoff · 02/06/2022 18:35

Oush.. any alternative recommendations?

Alnwick, lovely town and fab castle. Ford and Etal villages, Berwick on Tweed for a walk round the town walls. Fish and chips at Seahouses. One of the Running Fox cafes for coffee and cake or lunch.

Walking in the Cheviots. Kielder for watersports and cycling.

Beautiful, empty coastline.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 02/06/2022 18:37

It's mainly countryside, castles and Roman remains. There are some nice towns to visit and coastal areas - Dunstanburgh Castle ruins, Warkworth Castle and town, Bamburgh Castle and Chillingham Castle and gardens. Alnwick Castle is okay, but not worth the money imo.

It is a bit cold at the moment, but nothing a cardie and jacket can't deal with.

Well, it’s not the warmest place in the country, but no colder than anywhere else could be! And it’s far from bleak. Alnwick area or Bamburgh are good bases to explore from.

We are happy to do a mix of both coast and country. Really grateful for the recommendations so far!

Coasteering at Craster is fun.

BugsyDrakeTableScape · 02/06/2022 18:48

We're just headed home after a week near Amble/ Druridge Bay. Amble is a fab market town, Drudridge Bay is a gorgeous beach - it's been around 20 degrees today and the beach was pretty much deserted. Alnwick gardens much better than the castle IMO. Also Bamburgh is with a visit - it's a great place to be

UrsulaPandress · 02/06/2022 18:49

Alnwick
Bamburgh
Holy Island
Warkworth
Cragside
Chillingham
Dunstanburgh

For starters

I can't see this at all. Id never been until
I was about 30, not had close friends and family. It has spectacular beaches/walks. In my opinion it is an ideal place for a mini break, having been both with and without children. Bamburgh is my fave but there are lots of other places

peepee123 · 02/06/2022 18:56

Went there for my 40th. It is a wonderful area!
Fish and chips in Seahouses, was the best I've ever, ever had.
Chillingham Castle reportedly one of the most haunted places in the UK.
Bamburgh castle, Lindesfarne, all just wonderful.
There's no such thing as bad weather only bad clothes!
Would go back tomorrow.

SlatsandFlaps · 02/06/2022 19:00

We're in Northumberland now. Currently have a Swan and her Cygnets who have swam up to our decking looking for food 🦢
Followed by Canadian Geese & Goslings. Beautiful place. Yesterday was roasting! My steering wheel was so hot I couldn't touch it. We went to Holy Island today and it was stunning

Northumbria is a large area and would also cover Newcastle if you want to combine some of the country stuff with larger theatre and night entertainment or restaurants. There are great places to eat in Hexham and some local pubs.

AnneElliott · 02/06/2022 19:19

I love Northumbria. Definitely do a boat trip to the Farne Islands - that was such a lovely day.

Plus Bambrugh castle of course. And we did a day trip to Edinburgh from there.

Mammyofonlyone · 02/06/2022 19:34

I mean 'not' rather than 'not'. I am thankful to have both friends and family!

Seriously, just give it a go. Like anywhere rural in the UK it can be a challenge but if we didn't go anywhere just in case it rains, we'd never leave our own front doors. Enjoy and happy birthday when the time comes.

hummerbird · 02/06/2022 19:35

Think how cheerful people are in Vera. It is drab. You need thermals and good fleece or Barbour all the time. Yes there are islands of brightness like Alnwick.

Mammyofonlyone · 02/06/2022 19:35

'Nor' rather than 'not'!!! 🤦‍♀️

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/06/2022 19:38

It's bloody lovely up here.

I'd go somewhere quieter than Alnwick if was on holiday, loads of wonderful quieter areas like Simonside.

Find some Wall (it may be busy), a castle or two and the best beaches in the world.

OH, and we have amazing restaurants too.

Redannie118 · 02/06/2022 19:39

I live in Northumberland and will second pretty much every said so far but will add-
Alnmouth-picture perfect stunning seaside resort with gorgeous beaches. Good for a " grown up" birthday with award winning bistros and gorgeous country pubs.
Holy island. Cannot stress enough how beautiful and utterly magical this place is. Its a tidal island and when the tide goes out and the tourists leave its like you are on another planet( but one with lovely hotels, great food and drinks !)
Low Newton by the sea. Tiny, beautiful little coastal village with amazing views down to Dunstanburgh castle. The joiners arms in the village is a gastro pub with amazing reputation and you can stay in their very decadent rooms !
