Tell me about Northumbria, places to go, things to see, areas to explore?

We are looking to go away for my 30th and someone mentioned here.

Thanks!

I grew up there and when I go back I'm amazed how gorgeous it is and how much I never appreciated it.

Alnwick castle and gardens is nice and if you like reading then barter books in town is lovely.

Bamburgh and alnmouth and cocklawburn beaches are lovely.

Berwick is right on the border - places on bridge street are quite nice and there's the Barrells pub which is legendary.

Think how cheerful people are in Vera. It is drab. You need thermals and good fleece or Barbour all the time. Yes there are islands of brightness like Alnwick.

Lived there until I was 19, never wore thermals 😂 honestly it's not the back of beyond.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 02/06/2022 19:43

I'd go somewhere quieter than Alnwick if was on holiday, loads of wonderful quieter areas like Simonside.

Rothbury is a good base as a quieter spot. The toy shop there is lovely for younger kids.

I’m holidaying in Hexham soon, any places nearby of note?

StottyCakeandJam · 02/06/2022 19:48

It’s beautiful, under-rated and it’s the home of the stotty cake. What’s not to like?!

smith19784 · 02/06/2022 19:48

Love it up in Northumberland. We are going there tomorrow for a weeks hol. Can't wait. This thread is giving me some ideas of new places to visit so thank you.

darlingdodo · 02/06/2022 19:49

Yutes, Corbridge is beautiful.

PhotoDad · 02/06/2022 19:49

If you're going in the next couple of months and you're a nature-lover, then I second a boat trip around the Farnes, from Seahouses. Puffins! Lots and lots of puffins!

On someone else's list already, but if you like National Trust places, Cragside is a must. Extraordinary. Also a lot of great castles (I like Warkworth). What sort of things do you enjoy?

Love Northumberland. Moved to Newcastle 17 years ago and can't imagine being anywhere else now.

Thehonestybox · 02/06/2022 19:50

I work in North Northumberland...it's really not that cold. Most days this month I've been in a t shirt during the day

Eating out wise I can recommended The Rat, The Beaumont, The Heart of Northumberland as I've been to them recently.

The Abbey at Hexham is worth a visit, as is the Old Gaol, and a welk along the river. Corbridge is worth a day out as is Blanchland.

Some great bits of Wall near Hexham and if you have NT Wallington and Cragside are both amazing.

What do you like to do?

darlingdodo · 02/06/2022 19:51

From Hexham you can explore Hadrian's Wall, you're closer to Kielder, Weardale and the Pennines. Hexham itself is lovely. Blanchland, Derwent Reservoir.

Grants bakers in Corbridge and Hexham.

Waffledoggysmother · 02/06/2022 18:32

I honestly wouldn’t bother. It’s bleak and cold beyond belief.

Wow!
Yes op wont get a 30 degree beach holiday in Northumberland but it is a stunning place and definitely worth visiting

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/06/2022 19:52

@Yutes you also have to visit The Grateful Bread and have a cinnamon bun (open Tuesday to Saturday) and call into Cogito Books. The best shops in Hexham.

I love Northumbria. Definitely do a boat trip to the Farne Islands - that was such a lovely day.

Plus Bambrugh castle of course. And we did a day trip to Edinburgh from there.

Yes farne islands were our highlight

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/06/2022 19:54

No Grants in Hexham anymore @darlingdodo but the one in Corbridge is still going strong.

What sort of thing do you enjoy? If you are a history fan and want to see something on Hadiran's Wall (just called 'the Roman Wall' up here), I'd recommend Housesteads Fort. Under 30 mins from Hexham.

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/06/2022 19:57

Also in Hexham is Mr. Wolf, a wonderful toy shop.

Hadiran was obviously a lesser-known Emperor, but Hadrian was pretty interesting too. 😀

darlingdodo · 02/06/2022 20:01

Hadn't realised Grants in Hexham was no more, DisforDarkChocolate. Luckily we use the one in Corbridge much more. A cherry frangipane and an americano on the bench in the churchyard on a sunny morning - bliss Grin

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/06/2022 20:02

I miss there cakes @darlingdodo , I used to live on Eastgate and ate far too many!

123ZYX · 02/06/2022 20:03

Definitely a boat trip from Seahouses. In one boat trip we saw dolphins playing and jumping, loads of seals, puffins everywhere and guillemots with chicks.

Vindolanda is fabulous, and can be combined with the museum nearby.

I would have liked to visit Bamburgh and Alnwick castles if I'd had longer.

It's a beautiful part of the country - a walk along part of Hadrians wall to enjoy it would be a good idea.

User0ne · 02/06/2022 20:10

Oh no! Don't come here. The weather's always terrible, the beaches are packed, food is awful, market towns are ancient and the countryside is nothing to speak of.

Leave it for us locals to endure 😂

feellikeanalien · 02/06/2022 20:14

Well this is the view from our local pub. Northumberland is lovely. Good food, beautiful beaches and tons of history.

Its a stunning place! Beautiful beaches, fantastic scenery and friendly people.

DidoDino · 02/06/2022 20:18

Nope, it's horrible here. Nothing to do, nothing to see, and shit beaches. Don't come here. I repeat, don't come here.
