Tell me about Northumbria, places to go, things to see, areas to explore?

We are looking to go away for my 30th and someone mentioned here.

Thanks!

I live in Northumberland and will second pretty much every said so far but will add-
Alnmouth-picture perfect stunning seaside resort with gorgeous beaches. Good for a " grown up" birthday with award winning bistros and gorgeous country pubs.
Holy island. Cannot stress enough how beautiful and utterly magical this place is. Its a tidal island and when the tide goes out and the tourists leave its like you are on another planet( but one with lovely hotels, great food and drinks !)
Low Newton by the sea. Tiny, beautiful little coastal village with amazing views down to Dunstanburgh castle. The joiners arms in the village is a gastro pub with amazing reputation and you can stay in their very decadent rooms !

For coastal
Def agree with newton by the sea - absolutely lovely beach and great pub. Parking can be tricky so get there early or park at dunstanbrough and walk along the beach (tide dependent)
Bamborough is lovely also.
Inland Hexham and corbridge are great as well
As Alnwick and you have the castle and gardens too.

mackthepony · 02/06/2022 20:20

I did find it a bit barren tbh.

UrsulaPandress · 02/06/2022 20:21

In what way?

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 02/06/2022 20:24

I can recommend Chesters Roman Fort for a visit. The Roman remains are nicely preserved and the museum there has some of the best Roman artifacts I've ever seen. We enjoyed it more than Vindolanda.

watching with interest - we've booked a cottage for Alnwick in August. Bookshops and bakeries are right up our street, so will be making notes.

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/06/2022 20:27

I agree about Chesters @BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation , it's one of my favourites.

highlandcoo · 02/06/2022 20:38

Barter books in Alnwick is fab. I spent a very happy wet afternoon there last year.
The poison garden in Alnwick gardens was interesting and the wooden swing seats among the cherry trees and spring bulbs were lovely too.
Fantastic long beach walks to blow the cobwebs away.
Holy Island is magical.
and Flodden Field is very atmospheric (especially if you’re Scottish maybe) and the information boards explained the battle very clearly so I understood it properly for the first time)
i love Northumberland

Redannie, I'm an atheist through and through but find Lindisfarne a very spiritual place. I have told DH that for my next significant birthday I'd like to stay there for a couple of nights - preferably when the tide means the Hoi polloi (usually us!) leave at about 6pm and don't come back until morning....

MakingNBaking · 02/06/2022 20:47

I love the 'big sky' effect of the beaches. What others describe as bleak and cold and barren (though it isn't always cold) is what I love about the place. Bamburgh beach with its rock pools and the castle watching over all. Superb coastal walks.
And puffins!
Medicine for the soul

Waffledoggysmother · 02/06/2022 18:32

I honestly wouldn’t bother. It’s bleak and cold beyond belief.

🙄

doadeer · 02/06/2022 20:54

Many beautiful places.

Alnmouth, Warkworth, Bamburgh, holy island, Craster

Lots to see!

Think how cheerful people are in Vera. It is drab. You need thermals and good fleece or Barbour all the time. Yes there are islands of brightness like Alnwick.

I've lived in the North East for almost 36 years and I've yet to wear thermals!

What kind of things are you into?

The good thing about Northumberland is you have the best of both countryside and coast and are also not far from Newcastle for anything city based

otherbookmarks · 02/06/2022 21:09

My favourite bookshop is Barter Books in Alnwick. I can easily spend a day there

@Barkingmadhouse It was 32 degrees in Northumberland yesterday! I'm burnt all over

Snowbaorder2023 · 02/06/2022 21:16

All the places mentioned plus the locals and staff are always lovely and helpful when we have been. I'm thinking of relocating there when I retire. I find it a very healing and spiritual county.

SheSaysShush · 02/06/2022 21:18

I'm camping at West Kyloe in a couple of weeks. My in-laws are from Holy Island. The beaches!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/06/2022 21:20

Northumberland (rather than Northumbria) is a huge county eg; It’s around 90 miles from Berwick u Tweed on the NE coast to the Roman remains at Vindolanda and Housesteads which are almost on the Cumbrian border. All beautiful, all worth visiting, but maybe decide whether to do coast or inland. Alnwick is a good slightly inland base. Holy Island (Lindisfarne) is with visiting, but the causeway is only exposed at certain times - so check these out first! It may well also be worth taking g out National Trust membership.

MissDollyMix · 02/06/2022 21:20

Nothing much to add beyond what’s already been said. So much to see and do in Northumberland. One of my favourite places in the British isles. Much prefer it to the Lake District. But yeah, actually, it’s awful. Everyone stay away and leave it for me. Recently visited with DH and dream of moving up there. Alnwick, alnmouth, Bamburgh, berwick, lindisfarne, the cheviots, Newcastle… that’s just what I can think of off the top of my head. We often go and haven’t run out of things to see and do yet…

Where is Northumbria? It hasn't existed since the mid-10th century.

LuluBlakey1 · 02/06/2022 21:24

If you can't be bothered to even get the name of the place right, please don't come up here.

PaperMonster · 02/06/2022 21:24

BugsyDrakeTableScape · 02/06/2022 18:48

We're just headed home after a week near Amble/ Druridge Bay. Amble is a fab market town, Drudridge Bay is a gorgeous beach - it's been around 20 degrees today and the beach was pretty much deserted. Alnwick gardens much better than the castle IMO. Also Bamburgh is with a visit - it's a great place to be

Here at the moment! So much to do here. Love it!

oh my! Thank you so much everyone. I’ve been looking forward to a Northumberland trip for ages and you’ve all just solidified it!
was thinking of a trip to Barter Books as well! Thank you thank you thank you

Tell that to the university!

I've always thought that Northumberland = the modern county, Northumbrian = the wider region (roughly 'the North East') as in several organisations I belong to, such as this one:
