My friend thinks she's French

I have this friend, i've known her on and off for years, one of those let's do lunch once a year types.

Anyway, we decided that we'd do lunch yesterday as both our calendars aligned. She turned up and i shit you not, speaking with some mental half French half English accent. I just sort of went with it as it was so bizarre I had no idea what the hell to say to it. She even made reference to drinking wine with lunch ''like they do at home, you know in Paris'' ... it was the oddest thing.

Anyway, after the most bizarre lunch of my life, I called a mutual friend and apparently this has gone on for the past 8 months - she pretends to be French. She has even at one point shaved her eyebrows off and drawn them back in like Edith Piaf, she wears bateau neckline striped tops and cycles around town with baguettes in her basket.

At least she's got over her ''I'm Claire from Steps phase though'' - would you go NC? this is mental.

This is where self-id takes you.
I wonder if she can apply for an EU passport based on "identifying as French". 😂

Oh gosh, if you can, then I'm in!

I'll get my beret and some onions!Grin

I haven't read all of this but after my initial pissing myself laughing its actually quite alarming, sounds like a mental health crisis

I once had a tradesman round to give me a quote on something and as he was explaining what would need doing I became distracted in trying to pin down his accent.
or should I say accents.

For a couple of sentences it was Irish then French, then Welsh, then South African . He slipped in and out of different accents even mid sentence

That was bizarre. Don’t think I could keep a straight face if a friend insisted they come from somewhere they didn’t and put on an accent to prove it.

@Kennykenkencat i don’t think that’s too unusual. I do that as I moved around a lot as a kid and had family from various countries looking after me.

The next time you meet you must be dressed as a Flamenco dancer and speak with a Spanish accent.

Let's see how she likes them eggs.

This thread is comedy gold!

@Bassetlover

I think you mean how she likes 'des œufs' 😉

Yes, but most people who've lived in different places have an accent that's a combination of them all rather than being one place's accent for one sentence, another for a different sentence. There are also people who acquire new accents after having a stroke.
