My friend thinks she's French

I have this friend, i've known her on and off for years, one of those let's do lunch once a year types.

Anyway, we decided that we'd do lunch yesterday as both our calendars aligned. She turned up and i shit you not, speaking with some mental half French half English accent. I just sort of went with it as it was so bizarre I had no idea what the hell to say to it. She even made reference to drinking wine with lunch ''like they do at home, you know in Paris'' ... it was the oddest thing.

Anyway, after the most bizarre lunch of my life, I called a mutual friend and apparently this has gone on for the past 8 months - she pretends to be French. She has even at one point shaved her eyebrows off and drawn them back in like Edith Piaf, she wears bateau neckline striped tops and cycles around town with baguettes in her basket.

At least she's got over her ''I'm Claire from Steps phase though'' - would you go NC? this is mental.

I'm mostly irritated by the term 'our calendars aligned' my god.

She's probably still using the Napoleonic calendar.

The next time you meet you must be dressed as a Flamenco dancer and speak with a Spanish accent.

Let's see how she likes them eggs.

I often tell people I intend to start identifying as a tall Nordic blonde.

Sounds like she is using the Stanislavsky method.

I don't think she's even been to France in her life🤔

My former MIL was desperate to be French. She cooked everything in ' the French way' which apparently meant everything ( including chicken) was raw. She and her third husband were teachers and used to spend several weeks of the summer in a gite in France. She used to very proudly tell everyone who would listen that they only spoke French to each other the whole time. I asked my exhusband if she spoke French. He said no , not more than a few words. If she hadnt been such a fucking narcissist it would have been quite funny. She used to come back from holiday doing an absolutely wanky French accent .

Fluffyhairteddy · 01/06/2022 19:51

But if she feels french then surely she IS french?!

Hilarious!

MadameDragon · 01/06/2022 19:54

I would have swallowed the breton tops as I have s many myself but not the baguette.

onemouseplace · 01/06/2022 19:55

This is brilliant.

Although I do have a friend who disappeared off for a year abroad, and came back with a Canadian French accent when he had previously been distinctly Welsh.

ArtVandalay · 01/06/2022 19:56

That clip is so funny!

SunnyLobelia · 01/06/2022 19:57

There are actually multiple youtube videos and books and blogs that tell you how to pretend to be French. (Or live a French lifestyle- usually peddled by Americans who spent a summer in France in 1999).

I used to be obsessed with them. (still love watching a few old favourites).

It's like an actual thing.

I feel the baguette/breton top detail made this entirely unbelievable.

You think? 😂

This is where self-id takes you.
I wonder if she can apply for an EU passport based on "identifying as French". 😂

I heard about a YouTuber (?) who identified as Korean due to their love of K-pop!

pigwood · 01/06/2022 20:01

The baguette has literally pushed me over the edge Grinplease tell me she sometimes wears a string of onions round her neck too !

mnahmnah · 01/06/2022 20:02

Next time you lunch, please wear a flamenco dress, take a pan of paella ‘just like back home in Barthelona’ and speak with a Spanish accent throughout. See what she thinks.

AdaColeman · 01/06/2022 20:03

Well, I think she sounds fantastique! What fun she must be having, tres drôle!
Camembert pour déjeuner, lashings of vin rouge, chic clothes, what's not to like?

Anonnnnnnm · 01/06/2022 20:04

Absolutely brilliant stuff. Keep us in the loop.

PurpleButterflyWings · 01/06/2022 20:04

😂

diddl · 01/06/2022 20:06

C'est incroyable!

balalake · 01/06/2022 20:08

Sacre bleu!

Une fille qu'elle pense elle est française. Peut-être parle avec Madame Macron pour faite une piece de theatre.

I wish incidentally I could get a French passport, but have checked and cannot do so.

IvorCutler · 01/06/2022 20:08

Is she ok?
