Getting rid of sky tv…

Darkroot · 01/06/2022 18:20

But keeping the broadband. What are my options tv wise? Can I keep the sky Q box and use it as a free view box?

For some unknown reason the living room isn’t hooked up to an aerial so we’re unable to get free view through the tv (though we can in the bedroom 🤔)
Would a freesat box work without an aerial? Can it be connected to the sky dish?

Same

They wanted the sky q bocx back for me too.

I got an Amazon Fire stick that uses the broadband

etulosba · 01/06/2022 18:25

I cancelled after subscribing for twenty years. I haven’t missed it at all.

I kept the Sky box for FreeSat but got fed up not being able to pause and record so bought a FreeSat recordable box a couple of months ago. I wish I had done it sooner.

Darkroot · 01/06/2022 18:25

Ah… I hadn’t considered they would want the box back!

Hmm… I’m not sure what to do. We already have all the streaming services but I would like to access free view

Do you watch much on 'proper' telly? Do you have a smart TV. Things like Iplayer let you stream live telly. So you may not need an aerial.

We're considering getting rid of Sky. I can't remember the last thing we watched that wasn't on streaming or sports. And its not worth the eye watering amount for Sky sports TBH.

Yes, I would miss that too! Does the free sat box need an aerial?

I’m hoping we won’t miss it… we realised we don’t watch any channels other than the free view ones so it makes sense to get rid of sky… but I do like the tech!

The FreeSat box doesn’t have any aerial connections. Ours is connected to a Sky dish with a wideband Sky Q LNB, so able to record or watch four channels even though there are only two wires from the dish.

Darkroot · 01/06/2022 18:31

That’s another problem, we pay for sky sports atm but the only channel used is formula 1.

So that’s more money wasted. There’s no way of watching f1 without the sky package though is there? Apart from nowtv but their sports package is just as costly.

We’ve had sky cinema for a while now too (on a deal) has anyone noticed how awful the films are now? They don’t seem to get any good premiers since Disney+ came along. More money wasted.

I want to get rid of sky but also worried we’ll regret it!

That sounds perfect! Thank you!
I tried googling all this but I don’t seem to understand the tech talk 😆

We ditched sky and got a box through BT. we don't really use the box at all though. Ariel let's us access live tv which is good for bbc local news in the morning. Everything else goes through the smart tv. We got an Fire cube which is really user friendly. Subscribe to Now so can access all the sky programmes we want. Saves a fortune. No need to record as just watch on catch up.

SummerSazz · 01/06/2022 18:36

We have a Humax Freesat box which pauses and records and linked up to the old sky dish. It didn't cost that much and has been going for over 5 years so well worth it compared to Sky!

WingingIt101 · 01/06/2022 18:37

We made this call and today was our first day without it!

We have some sort of google tv stick thing (DH sorted it!) which allows us to access iPlayer / itv player / Netflix / Amazon prime etc. and so far the world hasn't ended.

As pp say we have been told we have to return both sky q boxes but I'm not worried about that as if we really want a recording box we will get a freeview one and I think they are fairly cheap!

It's saved us £100 a month

maythe4thbewithme · 01/06/2022 18:38

We also cancelled and don't miss it - have a smart TV so the usual apps for Netflix and prime, we have Disney and pay £4.99 for NOW that has a lot of sky content

Libertaire · 01/06/2022 18:39

F1 extended highlights are shown a few hours after qualifying & the race on C4. Basically, you see the entire race except the boring bits between the pit stop windows. It’s not live, except for the British GP, but the coverage is excellent.

HeritageVegetable · 01/06/2022 18:43

I got a 1 terabyte portable hard drive from Argos for fifty quid (you could get cheaper if you shopped around) and simply plugged it into the back of my smart TV to let me pause and rewind live TV.

parababe · 01/06/2022 18:51

We also cancelled and don’t miss it. Have free view, Netflix and prime. Saved us loads of money every month!

etulosba · 01/06/2022 18:56

FreeSat sell customer return boxes on ebay if you are looking to save a bit of cash. They have a full 12 month warranty so not really a risk.

mommybear1 · 01/06/2022 18:56

I am also looking to cancel sky tv but DH watches rugby and boxing - Now Tv seems to be an option but does anyone have any other ideas on the best (cheapest!) way to watch? He watches more than just "one off" matches/fights.

InFiveMins · 01/06/2022 21:12

I cancelled Sky and have Now TV. I don't miss Sky at all, whatever I wanted to watch I can watch on Now TV!

Brighteyedtriangle · 01/06/2022 21:15

Cancelled years ago. No aerial either annoyingly but I just use netflix, itv and bbc iplayer. Havent looked back and never short on anything to watch.

LilacPoppy · 01/06/2022 21:20

@InFiveMins you know NowTv is sky just a different format.

ancientgran · 01/06/2022 21:20

I cancelled Sky 3 months ago, they offered me a half price deal, then it went to just under half, rejoined when it got to just under a third of original price with a half price offer for anything extra I wanted. I'm just doing it for the 18 months I've signed up for as GC living with me who will enjoy the sport but when he leaves it can go. I didn't miss it at all.

MadeForThis · 01/06/2022 21:22

Get a roku box and just download the apps for each channel.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 01/06/2022 21:26

We cancelled sky and switched to BT. We have much faster Internet and DH got the sky sports channels (including F1) plus BT sport for a fraction of the cost that we were playing with sky. BT arranged for someone to come out and fit an aerial. I think we had a one-off cost but the first month of BT and the aerial fitting fee was still less than the monthly payment to sky.
