I am with Octopus Energy and always gave them actual meter readings every month. During February and March, I upped this and did it weekly as I wanted to be sure of our usage.

On 1 April, which was price cap increase date, I had a smart meter installed. I was pleased to get the smart meter as we had one of those old dial meter things and I also wanted to see how a small, two bedroom semi bungalow was using £95 in electricity each month. I never understood how people had much bigger houses and spent less in a month on combined gas and electricity than we did on just electricity. We have oil fired heating.

Meter was installed and was sending readings the same day. No issues however, even with the price cap increase of 54%, we have, for the last 2 months, spent less in electricity. Our usage has gone from £95 a month down to £54 in April and my meter shows £66 for May. We had 5 nights away in April which is why April was lower.

We currently have a credit balance of about £140 with Octopus. We haven’t made huge changes to what we use other than switching a few appliances off at the wall, ie kettle and microwave.

I am a bit lost as to why our readings are less when Octopus were indicating we would be using £145 ish a month earlier this year with the price cap increase.

I am wondering if the original meter was faulty? I suppose there would be no way of proving that though.
