Have you bought a new TV recently? Would you recommend it?

Our Panasonic TV has almost daily phases where it gets horizontal black lines over half the screen.
Typically it's not long out of it's extended guarantee period and quick enquiries makes me think it's not economically repairable.

If you have a great TV tell me all about it please.

I've got an LG which I bought 4 years ago.

It's a Smart TV but one of the cheaper models not the all singing & dancing OLED one...was about £450.

Very straightforward to set up and operate and haven't had any issues with it at all.

Think it's this one or similar:

I bought a Philips 'ambilight' TV at Christmas, and we really like it. I prefer a fairly small TV and the 'ambilight' function makes it more immersive without having a huge screen dominating the room. There are various different settings for the ambilight including switching it off completely.

I don't really use the smart features since I'm happy with Freeview and I'm an if-I-miss-it-I-miss-it person rather than using catch-up but it seems to work fine for the odd YouTube video.

The sound quality is decent for the size - we use it with a sound bar optical connection.

Downsides

  • the remote control is flimsy. There were actually two in the box so I wonder if it's a known issue. The one we were using stopped working but I managed to manually reset it following online instructions. To be on the safe side I bought a 'One For All' dedicated Philips remote very cheaply, and that one seems more robust.
    • the on-screen channel guide is very slow, and doesn't have a picture in the corner like our previous Samsung TV. Not a dealbreaker as we use a paper TV guide
Overall the benefit of the ambilight outweighs the other factors and we are happy with it.

I never really got big TVs. But then my DS bought me a LG massive smart TV and oh my! It really is terrific!

We got our LG OLED before Christmas. It's a bit bigger than our old Panasonic but the screen is much thinner so goes back into the corner more. Picture is so much better and the smart functions are useful.
