Has anyone done Camp America/CCUSA?

Hi
I’m feeling a bit nostalgic today as it has been 24 years since I flew to America to work as a camp counsellor through CCUSA.

I wasnt at a typical camp where kids go though. My camp was for adults with cerebral palsy which was quite different to other camps I had looked into. I did tick that I would go to any type of camp on my form and I’m very glad I did ( in the end! )

Doing this is quite a unique experience and I’ve not met anyone apart from people I met there who have done it. I’m still in touch with loads of people worldwide via Facebook. I didn’t even have a mobile phone when I went as they were just coming out (1998) so i think it would be a different experience doing it today. I am encouraging both of my dc to do it themselves if possible and would love to hear from others who have experienced it.

I did Camp Leaders about 10 years ago. I loved it so much, I went back 4 summers in a row.

I said no to adult special needs camp, and ended up on a Girl Scout camp which was perfect for me as a Guide leader.

I’m still in touch with a lot of people I worked with, and am hoping to fly out again in a few years for my camps 100 birthday celebration.

I did it yes. Loved it. So exciting, flying to New York at age 19 in a hot hot summer.

Yes, I was a lifeguard for a summer, then flew home, got an 18 month visa and went back as the camp I worked at had an outdoor education program that ran year round.

Ooh I’ve not heard of Camp Leaders before now. I love that you went back for several years! That was my plan too but a few months after getting back I met my ds’s dad and was with him for 7 years and by then I had ds and it was too late.

Its brilliant that your camp will be celebrating 100 years! Sadly, my camp no longer exists which is a real shame and I’m not sure of what happened exactly but it closed about 5 years ago.

I hated it for the first few weeks and was desperate to go home, despite making loads of friends. It was such hard work and relentless but I ended up loving it. The session breaks between guests helped as a group of us would travel for a few days and we had a ball. I’ve longed to back ever since. My camp was in NY state, around an hour from NYC.
