Which Greek island to visit in October?

We’re thinking of booking a half term trip to one of the Greek islands for a week this October (with two kids aged 11 and 9). Has anyone been there at that time of year? We’ve heard that Crete, Kos and Rhodes are the best bet for good weather in Oct but are open to other suggestions.

And can anyone recommend any good family friendly places to stay? We don’t mind hotels, apartments or villas but would rather not go all inclusive and would prefer to stay somewhere we can walk to local restaurants etc.

We holidayed on the Greek islands in early Oct one year, and all my careful research on local restaurants went to waste as they were closed for the season!

This was on Mykonos, where we were staying in a nice hotel but not in a town- I forget the exact location. In theory we could walk 5 mins down to the village for a choice of 5 or 6 places to eat... or not!
We'd been on Paros the week before, in a small town, and that was fine - but it was still September at that point, and I think 1st Oct was a pretty hard cut off.

If you're staying in/near a big town, I'm sure you'd be fine. But if you do go down the apartment/villa route, do make sure you check. Hotels will obviously have restaurants (and maybe closer to places where the season goes on later perhaps).

I went October half term (granted a number of years ago). Most of the restaurants were closed and the weather was very mixed.

None. I’d go to the Canaries.

I think the weather is too much of a risk at that time of year. Half term is towards the end of October too.

Thank you all. That’s really useful to know. Will have a look at the Canaries instead.

South. Rhodes, Crete.

AnchorWHAT · 30/05/2022 09:52

Apparently Kos closes once the season ends so yes canaries a better bet.

Most things will be closed.
I'd look at Cyprus, canaries. Morocco

Crete would be perfectly fine. It has its own local economy, if you stay close to the big cities, like Chania or Heraklion, you will find everything open. Plus the weather tends to be then very mild.

Staynow · 30/05/2022 10:22

Rhodes or Crete I'd say. Don't go anywhere small.

Cyprus or the canaries will have more consistent weather at that time of year!
