What the hell is this measurement?

What is the measurement on the this tape measure? I'm so ridiculously confused!

Is that 17.5 cm or is it 16.5 cm?

Two degrees and I can't work out how to use a tape measure! Blush

(so 16.5cm)

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 29/05/2022 23:18

It's 17.5.

The whole of that section is the 17s then the little markings are the mm's with the line that goes half way across the tape showing the .5 mark.

Like shown in the photo that's hopefully attached

I’d say 17cm

what are you trying to measure?

It's a body measurement device. So you put the tape around eg your waist, that white bit slots in a white holder and you press a button to tighten. It starts at 5 to allow for the plastic holder. Supposedly easier than a tape measureConfused

It's definitely 17.5.

On your picture, 1cm ends at the end of the metal tab, so the line next to the 2 is actually 1.5cm. The 2cm is the next line across

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 29/05/2022 23:23

No Half, you need to subtract one for your tape. The 1 marking is in the middle of the section that runs 0 to 0.9, the 2 is in the middle of the section that runs 1 to 1.9, and so on. The number refers to the next big line along.

secretmeetingsundertrees · 29/05/2022 23:26

Another vote for 16.5 to me, as would be 17 if to the end of the full line across the 17 'section'.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/05/2022 23:27

Check it using a piece of string or a shoelace and a ruler.

16/17 cm is pretty small. What are you trying to measure - a wrist?

Is the device designed to measure wrists? If it's intended for chest/waist/hips the uncertainty caused by not being able to read the scale easily will be a much smaller percentage of the actual measurement, so less of an issue than with something smaller, like a wrist.

SmugOldBag · 29/05/2022 23:28

Okay I found a trusty old tape which has the same markings on it. The end of the 1st line is 1cm. Half way down the section marked '2' is therefore 1.5cm

In which case half way down the section marked '17' is 16.5 as the 17 refers to the end of that whole section?

It was just an example, nothing on my body is 17cm!

String is genius!

The measurement in the op is 16.5.

exactly this @SmugOldBag Smile

potteringinmysocks · 29/05/2022 23:34

I take it back op, you are right! 16.5!

Smidge001 · 29/05/2022 23:35

I'm certain that is 16.5.

OMG, I blame an ear infection and lack of sleep on my inability to process complex thoughts. You are absolutely right of course. Seriously hoping the antibiotics kick in soon or god only know what im going to end up signing off on at work tomorrow 😂

SmugOldBag · 29/05/2022 23:39

The results of @BarbaraofSeville string test with a fairly trusty metal tape measure reveal the measurement to be 16.5!
(That black dot on the string is the original measurement)

What a terrible design! So when measuring I need to ignore the number on the box I have measured to and instead look at the previous number and add on the mms.

Well thank goodness that's sorted out!

😂 Good luck, when I've got an ear infection I give up on rational thought altogether till the antibiotics kick in Grin

MarmiteOnToast · 30/05/2022 00:04

16 5

catfunk · 30/05/2022 00:11

Definitely 16.5 - I don't know why people are so confused

That shows 16.5, though, doesn’t it?

LauderSyme · 30/05/2022 00:17

Bloody tape measure has got ONE job.....

TangyTangerine · 30/05/2022 00:19

It's clearly 17.5. The interval between the long lines is labelled 17 so the centre of that interval (where the measurement is at) is 17.5
