Anyone watching the TV show about the Queen?

It's like watching a grand family saga, watching the King with the grandchildren and knowing he'll die soon, watching the baby Prince Charles toddling around knowing how his life will turn out, it's all quite weird. I'm only watching so I'll have something to talk to fil about next weekend, he's in his 90s and totally in love with the Royal Family. I struggle to think up things to talk to him about so this is a gift.
Ds15 is sitting with me and much less impressed, his grandad will be horrified.

Yes I'm watching. Have surprisingly enjoyed it.

KindergartenKop · 29/05/2022 20:52

I think it's really interesting. Such different times.

User280905 · 29/05/2022 20:54

It's just so surreal that this is their actual life. It's like a Hollywood blockbuster. I think the Queen looked really happy in all the early films, its lovely. They looked like such a happy family. Yet they seem so messed up now.

I think it's lovely you take time to watch that just for your fil

Stillfunny · 29/05/2022 21:10

I put it on for my elderly aunt to watch. Surprised how interesting it was. Poignant to see her father waving her off and now knowing that she would not see him again. Also forgot how good looking a couple they were. Strange to see family resemblance showing up , Princess Charlotte looks like the Queen and some similarities in William of his father, etc.

What channel?

EvilPea · 29/05/2022 21:15

im very hormonal today. I did tear up at the wedding and just how happy they looked.

i loved how many dogs featured! Very interesting, what a different world charles will be taking over in.

BBC1. I loved it. Beautifully put together.

TerrazzoChips · 29/05/2022 21:16

I love that it looks like the sun loungers George VI was playing with The Queen and Princess Margaret on were the same ones he was later shown playing with baby Prince Charles on. It seemed so incongruous that they would also have 25 year old garden furniture!

FelicityFlops · 29/05/2022 21:16

I thought it was lovely. Very natural and, what I consider, normal.
My sister watched it, too, and was of the same opinion - considering that she is an inverted snob and Brexiteer, I was very surprised.

Loved the whole thing. Makes me strangely nostalgic for something before my time and that was never real for most people anyway.
Nevertheless I have always loved our Queen and this was a sweet programme.

Samcro · 29/05/2022 21:19

I really enjoyed it
did wonder how they recorded the queen talking
did they just use stuff she had said over the years

suckingonchillidogs · 29/05/2022 21:23

I thought the King seemed lovely, he seemed to have time for his children and didn't mind mucking around with them

IdiotCreatures · 29/05/2022 21:25

@TerrazzoChips Terry Pratchett explores this theme in the discworld novels, if you have a hundred dollars you can afford to buy the boots that will last the best part of twenty years. If you have twenty dollars, you can buy the boots that will last you two.
Basically if you can expend more in the first place, you can expend less in the long run.
A hard and fast rule in our world.

ChicCroissant · 29/05/2022 21:31

We watched it, I thought it was lovely - her smile when she was looking at her engagement ring before the engagement was made public 😍

Anne's grandchildren take after her!

Cleebope2 · 29/05/2022 21:33

That was a surprisingly lovely documentary. Loved the Queen sharing her words of wisdom too.

I think most of her commentary was specially recorded a few days ago. There was a credit at the beginning to that effect.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g thanks

lollipoprainbow · 30/05/2022 07:40

It was lovely made me cry.

User280905 · 30/05/2022 13:05

It was lovely actually. I started watching with my cynical hat on but it won me over. Truly a piece of history that won't be repeated. It's easy to forget that these are real people for all their privilege. And how lucky to have all that film of your family. I'd love to see a film of my grandpa with me when I was small.

I loved it. They were very 'normal' alone with the family.

nearlyspringyay · 30/05/2022 13:10

I'm no monarchist but I loved the programme, it was just a really lovely way of doing it.

I have massive respect for the queen, how she handles herself and she has committed herself to service.

toomuchlaundry · 30/05/2022 13:17

She looked so happy, was lovely seeing them enjoying themselves and just being relaxed. She seemed so relaxed and smiling when she set off for her coronation. It is so sad that a parent has to die so doesn't see them taking on something so momentous.

LizzieSiddal · 30/05/2022 13:25

I only watched because there was nothing else on, but found it enchanting and a lovely that we could hear the Queen.

thereisonlyoneofme · 30/05/2022 14:30

I loved it. The Queen has a beautiful smile. The King seemed a lovely family man,. and I think he was devastated to become King. The bit where PE was leaning up against a tree and overbalanced and steadied herself by holding on to PMs head made me smile.
