If you were at a party and, in making small talk with a randomer, asked them what they did for a living, and they came out with this before instantly changing the subject, what would you think that'd mean?

Caseworker of some kind, like a home visitor, or admin in a medical setting eg receptionist

PegasusReturns · 29/05/2022 10:36

Go knows but I would think they were a dick.

WeAreTheHeroes · 29/05/2022 10:37

Someone who sells plasters. Sounds pompous enough to be a self-important sales person.

PurBal · 29/05/2022 10:37

private sector like big pharma

TeeBee · 29/05/2022 10:40

Yeah I have a friend who described herself as a ' healthcare professional'. She visits elderly people and gives them washes and changes their beds.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 29/05/2022 10:40

Sales Rep

bluevioletsky · 29/05/2022 10:43

Probably a GP who doesn’t want to admit it and face abuse!

Newt13 · 29/05/2022 10:43

I'd think they didn't want to talk about work in their leisure time and used a polite way to answer the question but move on.

MissTrip82 · 29/05/2022 10:44

First aid certificate?

I work in an ICU and can’t really quantify how many times I’ve had a family demand a specific treatment on the basis someone ‘works in health’ who subsequently turns out to be dental hygiene student or naturopath.

Pretty common on MN for ppl to claim
to be health care ‘workers’, never specifying what, and then say ludicrous things about pharmacology/physiology/pathology.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 29/05/2022 10:47

Big pharma.
Possibly nhs manager.

taybert · 29/05/2022 10:47

The alternative is that they’re a GP and they don’t want to see all the party guest’s rashes or have to explain why no one can get an appointment/be expected to answer for another guest’s cousin being misdiagnosed/defend how much they get paid etc etc etc

Burnername101 · 29/05/2022 10:47

Sounds like the kind of vague bullshit I say when I don’t want to get grilled. I have the kind of job that sets people off on a rant, or invites a bloody interrogation at parties.

pizzaand · 29/05/2022 10:47

The one I know who says this is an assessor for atos

PestoPasghetti · 29/05/2022 10:48

Haha, all I kept thinking was 'Mortician?' but then I guess that's about as far removed from healthcare as you can be!! Could be something like a homeopath, but in my experience they're enthusiastic about their interest and want to share!

SundayTeatime · 29/05/2022 10:48

Could be anything. GP receptionist. Pharma sales. Hospital admin. Nutritionist. Etc.

PyjamaFan · 29/05/2022 10:48

I agree that it sounds like they don't want to talk about their job, possibly because of previous reactions to it.

notprincehamlet · 29/05/2022 10:51

Secretary of State for Health and Social Care?

This was my first thought too! I always give a vague answer and move the conversation on if possible.

notprincehamlet · 29/05/2022 10:59

Maybe they didn't want you to judge them, or show them your rash?

EspeciallyDistracted · 29/05/2022 11:04

Me because I really CBA to explain at parties and sometimes people get hold of the wrong end of the stick. Either that or their eyes glaze over slowly.

HIVpos · 29/05/2022 11:09

‘Associated with health care’ could mean voluntary work too. I do voluntary work in a couple of areas so when I’m asked I generally say I volunteer in health related areas including sexual health. Sometimes I go into more detail if asked.

SkiingIsHeaven · 29/05/2022 11:12

Have you googled them?

girlmom21 · 29/05/2022 11:15

I'd assume they didn't want to talk about their work for whatever reason.

This is true. SIL is a doctor and gets annoyed at people constantly asking for medical advice.

Her logic is if she was a hairdresser nobody would want free haircuts - and she's completely right.

Me too. I can't stand cagey people. I'm quite open and I don't have time for people who are closed off. They make me uneasy.
