How much are your gas and electric direct debits?

Just that really. Ours is going up to £250 per month.

We're a family of 4 in a 3 bed house. No idea how we can cut back any more.

Everything gets switched off when not in use. Showers instead of baths, tumble drier no longer being used.

I'm with EDF and they're prompting me to fix. I'm not sure what's the right thing to do - I pay monthly and submit meter readings into the app. Standard Variable. Might just white knuckle it through the winter.

EDF were offering a fix that was around 24% more than the current SVR so that one might be worth looking at if prices will go up 40% in October

Gas DD increased from £36pm to £75 pm

Electric is on a key meter and I was fortunate enough to be able to top up the max credit before April 1st, so not seen the hikes yet. The unit price has increased 42% though.

1 adult, 2 teens. 3 bed Mid terrace. Electric cooker, but gas shower/water/heating.

£110 in a 4 bed detached
We're in credit too.
We do have solar panels which will be massively helping

Bonkerz · 29/05/2022 11:32

£127 a month. With octopus. Monthly billing as we give readings. Bill last month was £120 for gas an electric. Currently £400 in credit so DD hasn't increased.

Direct debit has gone from £125 to £305/month. Family of 6 in a 6 bedroom house. I wfh full time, teenagers home quite a bit, plus their friends, so lots of screen use. We only have heating on a minimal amount and not at all April to September. I have stopped using tumble dryer completely since April, but will be impossible to dry everything in the winter if don't use it as the house isn't particularly warm.

I am worried about future increases. I always switched tariffs to get good rates before, but it's not possible right now.

£165 month
4 bed detached
2 adults 2 children

TiredButAlive · 29/05/2022 11:36

I've always refused to go on a DD. Just pay each quarter/month for what we actually use. 4 bed detached, currently 3 living here ... £145 a month for both Gas and Elec.

sanityisamyth · 29/05/2022 11:39

2 bed flat. Just DS8 and me. No gas. £55 a month but have electric heaters which I refuse to put on so we bought Oodies instead. Have built up a credit so I didn't put the DD up.

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 29/05/2022 11:39

£158 was £79 3 of us in 3 bedroom we have stopped using the tumble dryer other than for my sons underwear (he has about 30 pairs shorts and socks which he keeps them washes)

Our problem is we don't all eat at the same time so the oven is in use more than I would like. My youngest (18) cooks at 12/1am (pizzas, chicken bites etc)

The first month we were £167 so I asked ds1 to stop showering as frequently (up to 3 per day) and switch off everything at the wall and this months was £133 so we're just in credit and no more. Heating has been off for a month

the80sweregreat · 29/05/2022 11:50

It's pretty obvious that by November / December this year there will be the perfect storm of colder weather , shorter nights and another price increase that the £ 400 won't stretch that far for many people , even those that are being frugal now or in credit.
I suppose they will hope that the World Cup football being on during those months might distract from it all though :(

BigWoollyJumpers · 29/05/2022 11:58

Goodness, ours is soooo high. Currently £350 a month, but I am £500 in credit. The last three weeks we have had building works, so cement mixer going all day, numerous cups of tea, and couldn't use the outdoor line, so tumble drying. Also using hose all day for water. Dread to see what next months bill will be like, but with the credit in hand, should be OK. Am planning to keep the high monthly DD as would like to build credit for Autumn.

ThatNewGirl · 29/05/2022 12:08

£398 although OVO want to raise that to £410.
5 bed house, 4-8 people, 2 fridge freezers, hot tub, 2 loads laundry a day, no tumble dryer, 1 load dishwasher, cctv cameras on 24hours that I think use loads, heating is off March-Oct usually, robovac and handheld vac on all the time but everything else is only on when in use.

ThatNewGirl · 29/05/2022 12:08

Oh also hot water tap on all the time too.

SkirridHill · 29/05/2022 16:07

Ooh thanks @dementedpixie, will have a quick look today.

Bdragon · 29/05/2022 18:53

£90 a month DD for gas and elec, single person in a house. Used gas for a couple of hours only this month, and the actual usage was still £80. Mind boggling how expensive it will be in winter with the heating on.

LogOutLogIn · 29/05/2022 21:00

140 pcm at the moment - usually use around £110 pcm and give monthly meter readings. We only have electricity as rural. Annual usage is 4800 kwh, I don’t use the heating as we have a log burner, have heated airer instead of the tumble drier in winter but I do have a massive hot bath daily.
