How much are your gas and electric direct debits?

Just that really. Ours is going up to £250 per month.

We're a family of 4 in a 3 bed house. No idea how we can cut back any more.

Everything gets switched off when not in use. Showers instead of baths, tumble drier no longer being used.

Ours is £136, it went down from £180 a few months ago and we got a few hundred pounds rebate, Just checked the smart meter and we are at £79 for both, we are averaging about £2.70 a day. Family of three, not very profligate with gas and electric apart from the tumble dryer, it could be 50 degrees outside and my husband would tumble dry so gets used more than I think we need to. It's a 4 bed house, about 10 years old.

nextone77 · 28/05/2022 13:42

£135 a month! How is yours so high ?

nextone77 · 28/05/2022 13:43

Oh but mine is variable and I watch what I use tbf

£240 and I'm not in credit 🤦‍♀️

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 28/05/2022 13:45

About the same length as my piece of string 😀

You're asking a totally meaningless question. What are you hoping to achieve by asking?

The majority of people are on SVR now and their cost depends on how much fuel of which type they use

I genuinely don't understand the thinking behind the question.

supertedious · 28/05/2022 13:47

Dual fuel gone from £110 to £250 in the summer months.....I dread to think what it will be come autumn 😢

thesunwillout · 28/05/2022 13:48

Was £75 with eon but that was a cheap fixed rate that ends at end ofJune. 2 bed eot.

Offered £99 variable now, but I've gone for a 1 year fix of £126.
So that's about 25% above price cap.
With the price going up by 30-40% in October at least I know where I am for a year.
It all goes in as credit to my account.

The fixed rate I've been offered could go up, that's why I just did it.

It's important to look at your useage rather than compare amounts with others.
I did a list of the charges etc.

Most are 51p per day standing charge now for electric.
My electricity unit will be 38.7p

supersizeforaquid · 28/05/2022 13:48

Dd is irrelevant people could be in credit and paying a reduced dd to use it up or paying for usage plus debt
they could be on a more expensive of cheaper tariff than you are

to compare usage you want to know how many kWh you use to compare to what others use

Nat6999 · 28/05/2022 13:59

£69 before the price cap increase, has not increased yet because I'm in credit but according to my online bill I will be paying £717 more a year for the first increase & god knows how much more for the next one. Will receive £1200 from government plus £150 warm homes grant. Anything I don't need this year from the grants will go towards next year.

megletthesecond · 28/05/2022 14:04

It's a how long is a piece of string question really.

Mine is £130, 2 year fix. I send meter readings every month and I've ended winter in credit. 3 bed and loads of washing machine cycles a week.

BorisJohnsonsvomitbucket · 28/05/2022 14:05

£148. Used to be £80. Three of us in a two-bed flat. We've cut down loads, even doing the washing overnight and eating less hot meals. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/05/2022 14:06

We're with octopus and I set ours at 200 per month fearing the worst but did a reading this morning and it's 93 for electricity and 15 for gas. Pleasantly surprised. That's for a month/ 3 bed house.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/05/2022 14:08

Have you actually worked out how much you're using?

FlipFlops4Me · 28/05/2022 14:08

Two of us in a terraced 3 bedroomed house. One is an invalid. I pay £98 per month and so far I'm on target. Apparently. I'll probably put it up by a fair chunk just to be on the safe side. I can't help but think they've got it wrong.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/05/2022 14:09

£150- octopus requested £250 and I declined and agreed £150- I’ll top up if I need to.
3 bed terrace- two adults & two kids under 5

Badger1970 · 28/05/2022 14:22

4 bed rural detached. 4 adults living here (DH, me, DD and her BF).

LPG is £250 a month and we're in debt of around £800 Hmm

Electricity is also £250, just about in credit.

We've got loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, all newish double glazing. And we use a woodburner in the winter, which costs about £200 a year for wood.

Dolares · 28/05/2022 14:26

I increased our DD up to £125 last month. Family of 4, 3 bed semi. Though the latest bill was only for £81 and as we are £250 in credit, i think I'll reduce the DD a bit. I'm able to adjust my DD myself through the energy suppliers app. I'm assuming not all suppliers offer that option.

Like a PP says though, its all about how many units you use rather than what your DD is. E.g. For the last 30 days we've used on average 5kwh of electricity and 9kwh of gas each day. I think we are quite low users.

Hallyup89 · 28/05/2022 14:28

£370, although we are in credit. I'll be keeping it that way until winter and then reassess.

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 28/05/2022 14:28

£35 a month for gas we fixed it last August.

We're PAYG for electric, I normally put £60-80 a month on. Lower in summer.
We have a log burner for winter, probably spend about £250 on logs, kindle etc.
I should really go up to my parents, there are dozens of fallen trees to chop up..
I'm not arsed about these fuel rises, I can offset my spend thru my business as an expense.

redskyatnight · 28/05/2022 14:31

I agree you need to look at number of units and try to understand your usage.
We must be the only family whose DD has recently gone down - from £120 a month (gas and electric combined) to £95 as were in credit (but not by masses) after the winter months. I'm really amazed by the variation in how much people pay!

HillCrestingGoat · 28/05/2022 14:39

It isn't the size of the house but what stuff you have in it especially for electric. You could one oap living in a 2 bed terraced house and next door 2 adults, two teens and all the tech that comes along with that and usage. Very young children go to bed at 7pm, teens are still using tech for many hours after that.

All you can do is cut usage as much as possible. Old appliances might be using more energy. The best way to tell where your consumption is is to buy a smart plug and plug an appliance or computer into that and monitor consumption. It just adds up, every small thing adds into the big overall consumption.

We have a smart meter so my teens can see how much they use having a shower in the morning as it is an electric shower. Our electric usage is pretty consistent from summer to winter. All our lights are LED. Our gas is the one that fluctuates. The smart plug just confirmed our usage.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/05/2022 14:43

We use electric for everything but heating, I'm stunned ours is so low after all the hoo ha about the increase. Adult son using every gadget under the sun plus garden office.

Pippainthegarden · 28/05/2022 14:47

£250 a month combined, family of 5 plus step children part time, we are in credit

Miss2018 · 28/05/2022 14:51

Ours is £110 a month for a 3 bed semi with 3 people and 2 animals. We are 50% down on usage last year but we haven’t changed much habit wise, however it was a milder winter here this year for us.

Delatron · 28/05/2022 14:58

We just had a £564 debit go out this month 😱. I think it’s an estimate as DH called them and they admitted it was wrong. We’re getting a smart meter and have given new readings.
Hoping it will go down now the heating is off. I hate being cold and we do have underfloor heating so next autumn will be expensive.

4 Bed Victorian detached (and probably inefficient) house.

I did ask friends the other night and they said theirs were similar.
It’s a ridiculous amount so I need to get it down.
