How much are your gas and electric direct debits?

Just that really. Ours is going up to £250 per month.

We're a family of 4 in a 3 bed house. No idea how we can cut back any more.

Everything gets switched off when not in use. Showers instead of baths, tumble drier no longer being used.

Off to check my lec and gas app. My dd hasn't gone up yet...know its coming though

midsomermurderess · 28/05/2022 15:05

£75 all in. I have a one -bed Victorian flat, not the best insulated. I have turned my thermostat down to 18 degrees, shower as I don't like baths, use top oven as much as possible. Turn lights of when not needed. I reckon I'm fortunate.

Used to pay £47 a month gas and electric with Octopus. Two of us in a two bed terrace.

Octopus offered for me to fix at £110 a month. Seemed ridiculous so I decided to brazen it out. Put my DD up to £60 a month and that’s just covering it.

£400 at the mo. Was £180 a year ago but we got a hot tub, then the price rises. I estimate it will need to be £510 after October to cover a full year. Luckily I started paying in extra 6 months ago so I've built up plenty of credit. Will see what happens but it's not long term sustainable at this level.

SatinHeart · 28/05/2022 15:19

£120 for electricity only. Boiler is an oil one though which is a whole other horror show price-wise.

Vibing · 28/05/2022 15:21

OK so im 120 a month on a standard variable rate.

I checked out the fixed rated and dd's are like 240 a month!!

Are fixed rates the way to go before prices go crazy over winter?

HelloSpringIveMissedYou · 28/05/2022 15:28

We average just over 300 units of electric and 30 of gas each month.

2 adults, 2 teenagers in a detached house, heating off in April, back on in October. We have a log burner which is fab in winter as it dries the clothes!

Trying in vain to get electricity usage down but it's like swimming in treacle. I fixed last year with British Gas and pay £130 a month, fix is until November 2023. I'm hoping by the time the fix is up everything will have settled down & teenagers will have been surgically removed from computers!

Work2live · 28/05/2022 15:30

We used to pay £68 a month with Avro. Just me and DH.

When they went under we were moved to Octopus. We’re now paying £110 a month and got an email off them this week advising us to up it to £154😞

the80sweregreat · 28/05/2022 15:31

It's gone up from 130 to 180 a month for duel fuel with Shell. Modest 3 bed.
I am in credit a bit and the 400 will help too in the winter , but it's still the most we have ever paid for gas and electricity ever.

Lazypuppy · 28/05/2022 15:33

£100 a month, 2 adults and 1 child, used to be £65 a month. DD isn't a great comparison though better to look at actual usage.

We normally end up in credit over summer as we use basically zero gas as no heating then go into debt over winter.

DriftGames · 28/05/2022 15:35

£134, 1 adult & 1 toddler in a large 3 bed.

Lulu1919 · 28/05/2022 15:41

£245 a month
Four bed 1930s detached
Just two of us living here .

ivykaty44 · 28/05/2022 15:45

It's not the direct debit amount you should look at but the tariff and your usage. Direct debits may be set too high or too low compared to actual usage.

this ^^

utilities are pulling the wool over peoples eyes with all the direct debits fiasco

look at the daily rates and usage as to what your using

do weekly checks of your usage and see how many units of electric and gas you're actually using - do this through the winter and summer so you'll know when you've been overusing and why.

make small changes one week and see if at the end of the week its changed your unit usage

Blowyourowntrumpet · 28/05/2022 15:47

I'm £1,100 in credit due to a massive f*ck up with my previous supplier, so my direct debit is £1 a month. Normally it'd be about £150 combined for gas and electricity. 2 adults and a young child

Grumpybutfunny · 28/05/2022 15:53

Paying £233 but last bill was £180, have opted to overpay through summer so winter isn’t quite as horrific as it could be. 4 bed detached, family of 4.

Nearly 400, but need heating on overnight except in summer.

Is there no way around the heating overnight? Thicker quilts or something?
